Two-Lane Blacktop

David Drake, Dennis Wilson, Harry Dean Stanton, James Taylor, Laurie Bird

The surface story is a quixotic cross country road race between dapper sociopath playboy Warren Oates driving a showroom GTO and ultra-laconic proto-grunge hippie gearheads James Taylor and Dennis Wil...( read more  read more... )son behind the wheel of their primer gray souped-up '55 Chevy. In director Monte Hellman's hands, however, the raw materials of an AIP hot rod flick take on dark mythic overtones while becoming a quintessential document of end-of the '60s millennialism.

Not everyone will embrace it, but for me it's the best road film ever made. Some are going to find this film very dull and wonder what there is to admire and respect about it. Others are going to discover all sorts of things that are not actually present in the film itself, but ...( read more)are thoughts and reactions from it.

Ever wonder what a zen film might be like? This might be it. It's definitely an art film, but it's not stuffy or trying to express some sort of exaggerated importance in the least.

Beautiful low key, poetic road film with a hint of Antonioni. Warren Oates was gr8. Really captures that loneliness of living on the road. My satisfaction after seeing this film is permanent.

There's no way in hell I could pass final judgement on Two-Lane Blacktop after only one viewing. True, this movie is every bit as... out there as the characters its two stars (James Taylor and Dennis Wilson) play. I imagine this movie got pushed to the wayside as it's not filled ...( read more)with car chases like its contemporaries such as Vanishing Point or Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry. Two-Lane Blacktop seems to go for a more cerebral approach like Easy Rider. All I can say after seeing it once is that Warren Oates was great and for all the briefness of Harry Dean Stanton's role offered, it was great. Admittedly I was getting a tad bored with this movie but I loved the last 20 minutes.

The more I think about this movie, the more I'm liking it. Not quite sure who the audience is, but the counter-culture style the film offers really sparkles in a gritty way.

Being a Beach Boys fan, it was fun to see Dennis Wilson (RIP) in his bad boy role.

Nicely shot (for pen...( read more)nies) and great engine sound effects (gear heads should love this one); however, the acting is pretty horrendous and the plot line (or lack thereof) may drive some people off the road.

Me? I'm loving it. Will purchase on Criterion if I can find it.

Fantastic movie. Beutiful shots and scenery, amazing ending. Really great performances from musicians James Taylor and Dennis Wilson, did not expect that.

The first time i saw this movie it had my attention until the end and its one of those movies that the ending makes you say to yourself what in the world, but after repeating viewings of the movie i understand more why the movie ended the way it did. Im not gonna give anything aw...( read more)ay but the ending makes you wonder what happend.

Uneventful, almost forgettable. GTO was the only likable and cool (and damn hot) character - the rest were self-obsessed hippies whose wanton actions frustrated me. For as much talk about built cars, you'd expect more racing action, but it's majorly a road film.

From 1971 is this classic drag-racing film starring James Taylor (yes that James Taylor)and Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys. Also Warren Oates and a very brief glimse of Harry Dean Stanton in a small supporting role. The characters are: The Driver, the Mechanic, the GTO and the...( read more) Girl. Names are not used as a rule here and it's for a reason. Considered controversial & experimental at the time, this is a nice piece of work. Two motor-head drifters put their little 55 dragster on the line as they race a GTO across the country for "pinks" (their pink slips on the cars). Stowing away with them is a hitchhiker "the girl" played by Laurie Bird. Directed by cult legend Monte Hellman.
