Based on the classic novel by James Joyce, this drama deals with the life of an impotent married Jewish man, his wife and a student/poet in Dublin. Focusing more upon the characters' thoughts and fantasies than upon their actions, it features some of Joyce's previously banned prose. This drama was filmed in Ireland with a largely Irish cast and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Screenplay. ~ Kristie Hassen, Rovi

Critic Reviews from Rotten Tomatoes

"There's much to appeal in this miniature odyssey, notably the superb black-and-white location work."
‑ Wally Hammond, Time Out
"There is a lot to admire in this curio of a film."
‑ , Sky Movies
"An utterly definitive work."
‑ Kevin Maher, Times [UK]
"A flawed enterprise, partly salvaged by the use of genuine Dublin locations and the marvellous performances of the mainly Irish cast."
‑ Tom Hutchinson, Radio Times
"It's a disappointment, though watched again now for this rerelease, it doesn't seem as much of a disappointment as all that."
‑ Peter Bradshaw, Guardian
"It begins and ends with the word "Yes", and like much of this amiable, affecting and garrulous 1967 film, prompts a similar response from the viewer."
‑ Leo Robson, Financial Times
