With sincere apologies to all my flixster friends who are huge Bollywood fans . . .

Walter, I say, with great guilt, that I could not bear another syllable of this one. Not another frame, not another cut, not another jot, not another iota.

In fairness to me, I have been on an all-Bollywood, all-the-time crusade recently, so you'll see how highly, if you check my history of reviews, I've rated some BW product.

Seriously, Walter, I was climbing the walls a few minutes into this one.

I'm sure, because I'm a long-time flixster supporter to the bitter end, upholding the flixsterian democratic ideal that we are all entitled to our own opinions, no matter how narrow and inflexible they may be, that this one will most assuredly get big star ratings from other flixsters -- just not from me.

It's another one, Walter, for our list.

Please feel free to label me old, insensitive, and unbending, if you will, but I tried. I truly gave it the "old college" try. Just as with tripe like so-so Blue, or actually decent White -- the best one in a threesome of not-often-under-gushed-about fodder --, and seriously-most-disappointing and wholly vacuous color-trio buddy Red.

I really, really, really tried, Walter. But, as you know even way up there in the far East-North, time is precious, and life is short.

I mean it: long live GOOD Bollywood.

My first bollywood film. Wasn't too bad, but a bit overly long I thought, but the length seems normal for bollywood film.

I am f***ing pissed off at this film. I sat my ass down for like 3 hours waiting for something romantic that was gonna make me melt. By the end of this movie i was so disapointed i kinda wished she died in the film that way id have a reason 2-be bitter. What a a-hole abhishek was 2 aishwarya. Like are u kidding? What was the point of that film? I only like the music thats why i give it 3 stars!

En voyant ce film, on ne se pose plus la question : "quelle est la plus belle femme du monde?" pcq elle est devant nos yeux. PS : elle joue aux cotes de son actuel mari. Film traditionnel indien.

Tried to watch this, but it had no subtitles and was an old recording on vhs that was a little hard to watch. I hear it is an excellent love story though and wish i could watch it!

It's so sad her life! it's so dramatic and really touching. i love her costumes and the songs were super pretty. ash did a great job she definetly deserves a film fare award for best actress! shes like devdas some how, except she lived and surrendered to her pain!

A classic tale of a poetess/court dancer who falls in love with a Sultan...A very traditional film, great performance by Aishwarya who looks ravishing and very alluring in the movie...

A classical story about a real talented lovable women who suffer lot of pain in thei society by various ways thru love. A women must see to aware of it and men must see to not make it happen again for women. Afterall all r human and both r essential n exual in one's life.

Man, can she cry or can she cry... Aishwarya Rai was perfect for the role of Umrao Jaan. Abhishek Bachchan is hot and knows how to play drunk

This bollywood movie is playing at my movie theatre and I have seen several parts of it, and it's loud and annoying. So I will not pay to see it, but if it randomly came on tv, maybe, but that's a maybe.

I really enjoyed this movie . Ash's acting was good. They could have used a better actor for the lead male role. The sets and music were both good. I haven't seen the orginal so I can't compare the two.
