Quintessentially this is a contemporary superhero movie, and a damn good one at that! Probably M. Night Shyamalan's best film to date.

The real star of this movie was Sam Jackson's hair.

"Are You Ready For The Truth?"

Actor Bruce Willis and writer/director M. Night Shyamalan reunite after the surprise success of The Sixth Sense for this supernatural thriller. David Dunne (Willis) is taking a train from New York City back home to Philadelphia after a job i...( read more)nterview that didn't go well when his car jumps the tracks and collides with an oncoming engine, with David the only survivor among the 131 passengers on board. Astoundingly, David is not only alive, he hardly seems to have been touched. As David wonders what has happened to him and why he was able to walk away, he encounters a mysterious stranger, Elijah Prince (Samuel L. Jackson), who explains to David that there are a certain number of people who are "unbreakable" -- they have remarkable endurance and courage, a predisposition toward dangerous behavior, and feel invincible but also have strange premonitions of terrible events. Is David "unbreakable"? And if he is, what are the physical and psychological ramifications of this knowledge? Unbreakable also stars Robin Wright-Penn as Audrey, David's wife; the supporting cast includes Spencer Treat Clark and Joey Perillo.

At first, a certain element of ennui set in. I thought the movie was going to be slow paced and formulaic at best. However, as the plot developed and the drama began to build, I found myself once again praising M. Night Shyamalan. If you enjoyed The Sixth Sense, this movie will not let you down. Of course it has the episodic twists and the morose undertones that we have felt since Praying with Anger (there is always a modicum of immateriality in all of M. Night's works) but this film also has a sense of excitation that keeps you churning in your seat for more. Samuel L. Jackson plays an entropic hero that is so well cast, he could rival De Niro on any given subject. And of course there is Willis, who plays the part of the eudemonistic spirit who we have loved since Blind Date. Add a bit of Shyamalan magic and you've got a formula for success.

I would disect this movie bit by bit, but since this movie is so fresh with style and flavor - I'll let you try and understand why I said its "X-men meets Frequency meets The Sixth Sense."

A movie that proceeds slowly and with care without being boring.

The characters are drawn with time and care, layers upon layers. They stay distant without it being recognizable.

What piques interest is that the came angles are very uncommon in a few places; they make one wonde...( read more)r if there is something going on, and at the same time create a new kind of focus on the scene and the people in it.

Altogether, "Unbreakable" has a nice mix of super hero and comic myths combined together with the actual plot; what first might seem ridiculous turns out possessing more depth that would be obvious. The opening titles and the first scene seem totally out of place, but in the end, they make very much sense.

Few nice twists during the movie carry it along, and there is almost a sense of discovery for both characters and viewers. "Unbreakable" is not obvious; far from it.

I hate movies based on comic books for the most part. Ever seen the Punisher? Then you know what I'm talking about. However, this movie is probably the best in the genre. Check it out, and restore your faith in comic based movies. (it's not really even based on a comic I don't th...( read more)ink).
