Great campy, cheesey zombie flick. Everything a B-movie is supposed to be. Fun, gory, pure entertainment for those who don't need the big budget baddies and c'mon... it's got zombie fish! lol
I think the goal of this movie is to make a campy throwback movie that evokes the movies that the Sperig brothers loved growing up. It's like an Australian equivalent of Slither. But with much less finesse. But what it lacks in elegance is makes up for in sheer exhuberance, gore and giddiness. The comparison to Brain Dead is apt: it makes as much sense and is as much fun to watch. Aliens, and zombies, and killer acid rain, and hicks who know some sort of upside-down shotgun karate. I enjoyed this movie, but it lacked the freshness and novelty that was so delightful about Jackson's film.
I really loved this movie, it is a shame I don't have it on DVD.
At first I read the back of the DVD cover and thought, erm, yeah that sounds, erm...boring. Gosh was I wrong.
Zombies and aliens in one who'd have thought that would have worked. Obviously Michael and Peter Spierig did and after seeing this I have to agree. Some scenes are laughable but mixed in there [look hard enough and I promise you'll find them] there are amazing parts.
I'm suprised Mungo McKay isn't in more films to be honest, his lead in UNDEAD was fantastic. It's a shame the same couldn't be said for Felicity Mason though; i'm pretty g;ad this is the only film i've seen her no-substance acting in.
Overall a great hidden gem of a movie offering a different slant on the zombie horror genre.
The story seemed so-so for me. It was like a combination of "Night of the Living Dead," "Dawn of the Dead"'s first half, plus a Twilight Zone episode that I won't name because it'll give away too much information. It can be quite funny at times and quite gory as well. But the factor that ruined all of it was the cheap CGI f/x. The weaponry was very unimpressive as well: suddenly, there's a guy that takes half an hour coming up with different ways he can release his pistols, and next, the dude throws pens at a can with pin-point accuracy and blows it up. That multi-shotgun weapon on the cover is the only sick-ass firearm and it isn't even used that often.
Horror Not to Miss List Commentary: This is one of my top indie zombie flix, and I prefer it better to its other Australian peer Braindead by Peter Jackson. Though some audience members are frustrated with the genre-blurring that occurs because the film-makers are looking to up the visual ante of their movie, and they are thusly accused of being Spielbergian because of some of their additional creatures design and action-based horror scenes. I think it's all done just right, including the occasionally stiff acting. There are so many innovative zombie scenes, my favorite being a pair of walking legs with accompanying spinal cord, sans a torso. The protagonists are given action-style cinematic hyping, but it's justified and cool, not unnecessary and forced. Here's a zombie that not only bothers with continuity and structure, but the independent film-makers, two brothers, behind it further proved their dedication to this project by doing all of the CGI themselves on a 700mhx processor computer, for three years after shooting concluded. These effects are on par, and in some cases better, to what big Hollywood bucks is turning out even years later. This is truly proof that auteurs are still alive and, beyond that, still bothering to work with a concept/genre considered exhausted like zombies.
Hugely disapointing zombie flick that is neither funny nor scary. It's reasonably gory but most of that gore is created using very poor CGI. The plot reminded me of PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE, which, by the way, is a better film than this.
There are very few Australian horror films I like, and this is not one of them.
Another one of those kick ass zombie flicks. A must watch if you like watching horror/comedies with lots of blood and gore. A nice movie to watch with a bunch of friends.
Australian made zombie/alien movie. Part comedy, part horror, and part "what the" kept me entertained. If they took out the aliens, the thorn wall, and the ability of the zombies to keep on getting up, it'd make a pretty good zombie movie. However, with all that, it's one weird film.
This movie isn't good horror, comedy, schlock or any other genre I can fit in into. It's terrible in all categories. Avoid like the plague. I want my 90 mins back.
It was so funny! Don't take this movie seriously; NONE of it could EVER happen. In fact, the plot is absolutely ridiculous, which is what makes it so fun. Great zombie effects and I love the hammy acting (done on purpose of course).
This was hilarious! If you're looking for a "serious" zombie movie, look elsewhere. This movie doesn't take itself seriously, and it pretty much slaps you in the face with that fact right away. There are jokes a plenty stolen from George A. Romero's Dead trilogy, as well as from Sam Raimi's Evil Dead films, among others. It's a twisted, laugh-out-loud good time. If you can appreciate a good horror-comedy, then kick back and enjoy.
I give this one star only because at the start of the movie when it was showing the little country town I almost pissed myself at how it reminded me of my hometown. The who movie was so lame and unbelievable. However the effects were pretty good for a low budget movie. Just the story was so bad I was laughing most of the way through the movie.
Oh yes this really suprised me. I thought it was one of those really cheesy try to be scary zombie rip offs that most other films have been. Glad to say that i was proved wrong. Undead is a gore filled paradise of gore and hilariously funny moments. I don't know about you but i found the cop hilarious every time he spoke with f*ck this and f*ck i was laughing so much i ended up crying with laughter. There were some decent setpieces in this and a couple of scenes were borrowed from The Matrix and used to full effect. The special effects were better than i have seen in most Hollywood movies. The blood is laid on thick and the guts well they were spread quite well too. This has been compared to Braindead and i can understand why. The splatter is kind of like Braindead gruesome and funny as hell. The zombies look good too, better than they did in the remake of Dawn of the dead, they were a lot more menacing. if you haven't seen this yet then i use you to see it, well worth watching.
I watched this movie with my roommate. We had no idea it was a comedy until some of the scenes became a little too cheesy and we found ourselves rolling around laughing at some of the corny action. For instance an old lady gets her head blown off by a shotgun (no that isn't amusing, but read on) when the girl is telling someone about what happened to her, the other person asks "she is she dead?" That kid of dark, sardonic humour is hidden all over this movie, towards the end it gets ridiculous and rather boring, then the laughs dry up and you are left with a dull movie.
A cool little zombie import that is very much inspired by Peter Jackson's DEAD ALIVE, but with various jokes from EVIL DEAD...along with the expected Romero movie jokes. Pretty decent.
A meteor shower hits a small fishing town in Australia, and the locals spontaneously turn into flesh eating zombies. And yes, we have a small group of survivors holing up in remote house in the woods, a gun toting Clint-esque hero and every other cliche associated with the genre. Essentially, it's 28 Days Later without the laughs, which considering it's supposed to be a comedy is not a great start. Touting itself as the Australian Shaun Of The Dead, it lacks all the wit and subtlety of that film, the script coming across as an ill conceived sitcom with gratuitous blood and guts that the writers seemed to be making up as they went along. Throw in some Hot Fuzz style action cliches and a Twilight Zone style ending and you have an extensive hotch potch of ideas, but not one of which is remotely original. In a comedy, this of course does not matter as long as it's funny. It isn't.
So silly, but allso a great fun. It drops every ounce of realty and instead focuses on bullet-time, alien conspiracy and lots o' easily broken zombies!
This was a good movie for the budget. There were some great fight scenes/moves done by the hillbilly gunnman. There could have been some more detailed gore instead of just blood, but it didn't ruin the movie. What made the movie was the incredible twist that was thrown at you.
Aussie zombie/alien comedy mishmash w/ El Mariachi thrown in that solves it's red herrings w/ a triple barrel shot gun. Too many holes for its own good really where it could have been a much better film about undead fish. Bloody @ least
A low-budget Australian comedy horror with an out-of-this-world twist. Unlike other zombie films, a meteor storm is responsible for turning residents of the town into the undead. Add some mysterious beams of light sucking things into the sky and 'burning' rain and you've got a new premise for the standard zombie film. It's low budget but the characters are very cliched with the tough but silent gun-laden hero and the cop who makes it clear he's in charge despite not having a clue. There were some nice scenes in it but it doesn't stand out at all although the triple shotgun is a nice weapon and there are some nice action scenes. Rent before deciding to buy.
This was a very weird movie, but it had good moments. Plus it gave us the ultimate weapon - The Triple Shotgun, only to be topped at the end of the movie with the quad-shotti.
A hugely entertaining zombie comedy that gleefully mixes it's genres. Not only is it a horror comedy, but the Spierig brothers also throw action, spaghetti western, science fiction and kung fu elements into the mix with glorious abandon.
And Marion, the local wacko who claims to have been abducted by aliens, is a truly superb hero.
