Wall Street meets Mob Street
Under New Management is a wonderful take on the Mafia genre and tells the story of an aging Brooklyn mob boss Don Vincenzo who summons his nephew Robert Monte, a Wall Street yuppie named Robert Monte (played superbly by Chris Diamantopoulos) who has been shielded from the "Family" business after his own father was whacked. The Don solicits a promise that if anything happens to him, Robert would reform his crew by helping them go legit so that they will not spend the rest of their lives in jail. Robert reluctantly agrees.
When his uncle dies suddenly, Robert forms a real-estate company and tries the guide the old timers into becoming legitimate real-estate agents. Meanwhile, a beautiful FBI agent named Julie Capp (played by Kelly Overton) works feverishly to build RICO indictments against Robert and his crew who just can't help reverting to their old-school hoodlum ways. These two star-crossed lovers find themselves wooing one another from opposite sides of the law with Julie's sister urging her to "go for it." Robert tries to steer his guys legit while Julie tries to steer them into jail. Will these star crossed lovers find romance?
The movie is a drama mostly played for laughs, and I found it brilliant and hysterical, with Monte continually comparing the Mafia to Wall Street: "Bernie Madoff made you guys look like shoplifters." What's so funny is how true his opinions are. When the gang grumbles about paying taxes, he points out to them, would you rather pay taxes or lawyers? The only difference between a robber baron and the Mafia Don was that one was legal and the other wasn't."
