Not as good as I was expecting, the first minutes were awesome, then the characters became very annoying and disgusting I just wanted them to suddenly disappear or something. The premise is REALLY good, but the characters kept the movie from being a masterpiece. I know, the characters have to be disgusting in a black comedy, but they were so cartoonish and annoying that I didn't laugh once... The ending was weird but really good, though.

I grew up on movies like that. This one is classic black humor drama movie. Behind the comedy is hidden the pain of whole generations, which have suffered WWII, The Cold War, the war in Yugoslavia, the communism, the fall. There are very less movies that critics and normal people both can love. And "Underground" is one these masterpieces. If you like Fellini movies, you will as i feel.So it will be your favourite 4.5 stared movie. If you dont like Fellini movies, you will love it anyway.Cause Emir Kustu...( read more)rica following Fellini with his way.He can say "i did it my way".Casting is very very great.Espeically Miki Manojlovic's (Marko in the movie) was one of the greatest actings of all time.I didnt use to know him.But i wont forget him because of this movie.
Acting and Directing is so perfecto that i didnt talk about its marvelous script.Marko and his best friend are living in Belgrad while the World War 2.They began to hide in an underground shelter and do weapon business. While their men are doing tis.Marko is going out from the shelter and be the leader of Belgrad's stand. He helps Belgrad to defend. But his friend and the people who helps the weapon business are still in the shelter and think the war is still contiuning.Marko doesnt tells them the truth and get rich and live his life. But one day underground people decide to go out and fight.
Now think this story as absurd, ironic, funny as you can imagine or dont imagine anything and watcj the movie.

Surreal, crazy, absurd, ironic and full of emotions. You can't really not love Underground. Feels like Kusturica reached culmination of his career with this one, since later films are far from his earlier career. Hopefully he'll produce something more to my taste soon again.

This movie has "it". That indescribable and undeniable sense of greatness that is found in only a select handful of films. The two friends have an u...( read more)nderground weapons factory that can be seen almost as a full functioning community. This is all imagined in a very surreal and dream like way. The underground society is focused on much of the film as the war ends; but the people underground continue to live in fear; unaware that it has been over for many years. You will feel like you've experienced the full lives of the two main characters by the films end; and the plot plays out so poetically that after watching it grew on me substantially and has been lingering in my mind ever since. An absolute epic that you shouldn't miss. 4.75/5 stars.

    Seen 2 times.

I saw this amazing film today and I must admit - I'm so in love with Kusturica's work now! This is by far one of the most beautiful films I have ever laid my eyes on. I laughed so hard watching it, and it also brought me to tears at one point.

This is a perfect picture of how at least I always "believe" the yugoslavs are - a stereotype of course but none the less entertaining.
I love it and I love Kusturica - oh and I almost forgot the passionate and beautiful music by Goran Bregovic - this film is perfect for anyone who wants to enjoy a great evening of yugoslav culture. See it now!

Underground is a fable about a country that no longer exists, it's breakdown, and fragmentation literally illustrated in the films final moments when the characters gathered together on a beach find the ground breaking off like a glacier, and sailing out into the ocean. That's ju...( read more)st one the many amazing images thrown into the flamming bonfire of this movie, a bombing where all the animals escape from the zoo, drunken tank rampages/singalongs, etc. At over three hours long, the film tries to pack about as much information and jubuliation as it can, I lost count of how many parties there are. Theres an insistent zeal and vitality in this film that come out in the first frame, where two men drive a wagon drunkenly through town while a full horn band runs behind them playing in perfect time. "Undergound" covers a huge amount of time in a dense allegorical space, but does without succombing to mellacholly or pretension, or getting to tangled in its own details, though with further views, the details are plentiful. This movie made good on it's hype, and managed to really be one of the best films of the 90's, it's massive scale, and manic performances, probably turned away as many as they might have brought in, as might the allegorical nature of the story. Which is a real shame because this is the most entertaining historical movies, I have ever watched, almost each character monologues, sings, dances, performes phsyical comedy, and all without feeling staged or forced, or rather feeling appropriately staged, the right style at the right moment. It's a long, long, sit, but it's well worth the time, a fun, funny, lyrical, surreal, and boisterous epic of a country existing in the minds of it's people, it's passions and virtues as well as it's trappings.
