Parts of this film are really bad, like filming a bunch of tourists on a small boat singing "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean", the whole damn song, but the subject matter trumps every bad directorial choice and this film will touch your heart. It's a sad story, and does, to be fair...( read more), have more good directorial choices than bad ones. The family is presented with grace and has a surprisingly universal appeal that reaches far beyond its own culture.

Compelling and compassionate film-making: visually sublime and, despite the occasional lull, an incredibly interesting and minimalistic documentary.

of course, people will behave differently when they know or they've been told that they'd be filmed....so somehow, i think what has been documented about in this movie has been somewhat altered to some extent. And yet it remains very interesting, vivid, and imaginative!

A slightly uneven but still thought-provoking examination of the impact of capitalism on individuals and the environment. This film would be an interesting supplement to a basic course in economics.
