Used Cars

Kurt Russell, Jack Warden, Gerrit Graham, Frank McRae, Deborah Harmon, Joe Flaherty, David L. Lander

This 1980 film by director Robert Zemeckis gives no indication of things to come in his career (Contact, Forrest Gump), but it is representative of a certain cynical humor he shared ea...( read more  read more... )rly on with writer-partner Bob Gale. Kurt Russell and Jack Warden star in a sketchy comedy about competing used-car salesmen who resort to outrageous tactics to lure customers away from each other. The jokes, like the characters, are intentionally recycled, self-conscious comic fodder from a baby-boomer's lifetime (such as Gale's or Zemeckis's) of immersion in pop culture. That makes Used Cars more pastiche than original (the film's title itself suggests that), but as such it has some good, if vaguely familiar, laughs in it. Russell, particularly, is very funny as a practiced con man. --Tom Keogh

Rober Zemeckis actually directed a fun movie in his career? With Kurt Russell dressed in full disco gear? And it's actually an acid comedy instead of some stupid feel-good crap? Damn, hollywood did used to have better days.

Completely un-PC comedy but who really cares, what can you expect from a couple sleazy used car dealerships? Kurt Russell is great as fast-talking salesman and Jack Warden a hoot in a double role as brothers who own competing neighboring lots. Some good car stunts, plus the mos...( read more)t dangerous stunt I can recall performed by an actual actor: Gerrit Graham stops his car, gets out, walks backward across the highway while talking to himself, and a car traveling 30-40 mph swerves just in time to miss him by only 3 feet, and Graham continues his walk and speech across the road without even reacting to the car!

God I wish I had a few of those cars they didn't appreciate at the time of this movie!

Terribly long movie. Kurt Russell doesn't cut it as a fast talking used car dealer. The funniest thing to me about this movie was the dog.

My least favourite of all of Robert Zemeckis' movies, but a fairly amusing (not to say really wacky and kinky) comedy in any case. The plotline, about two rivaling used cars salesmen who will go to any length to put the other out of business, is pretty much as simple as it gets. ...( read more)Perhaps a little too simple, as it would probably have worked better as an SNL sketch or something, as opposed to a full-length movie. It sure has its moments though and was funny enough to be worth the watch.
