When you've got a movie full of crazy vindictive drug-addicted alcoholicl bitches who are all pretty good looking and STILL manage to make the whole movie boring as fuck...I don't know where I was going with this but the movie sucked.
Susan Hayward is great, tough as nails, Sharon Tate is touching, Lee Grant is fine in a small role, everything and everybody else is a mess. that can be very good or very bad depending on your mood.
3 women form friendships, while going after there dreams in showbusiness, after set up, where one of them is a inocent girl from england making it fresh in newyork, we forward a couple years where careers have progressed or gone down hill, and relationships and career moves tested, a great looK at cut throat industry in hllywood, and a great look at friendship, and what it costs, the late sharon tate is suprisingly good as one of 3 friends, a film from the 60s thats quite sexuall for its time and shows with others times were changing, a nice partner with what ever hapend to baby jane, as a look at women frirndships in hollywood
This is a great adaption from one of my favorite novels. patty duke is outstanding as Neely O'hara! And I love the Dionne Warrick song, always makes me cry!
So much has been written about this film - but one thing remains true: it is a quintessential, 1960's time capsule. Everything from Anne's lipstick shade (barely pink) to the George Nelson chairs in her modern home are a showcase for that decade. It is this barrage of 60's details that contribute heavily to the enjoyment of this film. Too many people focus on this film in an intellectual way, as if discussing "Citizen Kane" or "Gone With the Wind." "Valley of the Dolls" is a visual feast! Enjoy it like a double-chocolate brownie!
I have watched this movie over and over again. It always makes me feel good to realize we can make our dreams come true and that drugs have been around a long time and still are not good for us. A chick flick for sure.
This is such a camp movie, but I have to admit, I enjoyed it. I think that the best part, for me, was Sharon Tate's beautiful performance in this, it was really touching. Barbara Parkins was okay, but was it just me or did her and Lyon remind you of something from a 40s war movie? And Patty Duke as Neely, what to say, was pretty alright, i thought. I have to admit, some lines were cheesy & some were just dripping with overacting, but overall I enjoyed this movie, and the theme song is gorgeous.
"Valley of the Dolls" is 60's camp at it's best! I have seen this film more times than I can count and still really enjoy watching it. Expect lots of over the top acting, beautiful women (particularly Sharon Tate), vintage Hollywood glamour, and campy dialogue. Overall, a really fun movie to watch!
OMG!!! What an absolutely terrible movie. Terrible songs, terrible acting (except for Sharon Tate), and totally dreadful clothes. This movie is so bad, I loved it!
And this is what happens when you run Jacqueline Susann's "Valley Of The Dolls" through a shredder then gave it to Russ Meyer & Roger Ebert to make a script and film outa.
Trashy film.fro the trashy, once shocking novel about the seediness of Hoolywood, the stars are great, based on Judy Garland & Marlyn, and others, musici nice too!
I was quite disappointed with 'Valley of the Dolls' only because I had expectations after reading the book. This definitely doesn't live up to the book, but I suppose if you have never read the book, this may be good. It's just that I was expecting it to be as good as the book. Still of interest though.
