Vampires (1998)
Directed by John Carpenter
Starring James Woods, Daniel Baldwin, Sheryl Lee, Tim Guinee, Thomas Ian Griffith«Jack Crow: Can I ask ya something Padre? When I was kicking your ass back there... you get a little wood?
Father Adam Guiteau: What?»A team of Vatican sponsored mercenaries led by Jack Crow (James Woods) rids an abandoned house of vampires in the middle of New Mexico, United States. The sun sets and, as the Slayers leave, the Master bursts out of the ground outside the house.
"Vampires" starts of really well; a typical vampire movie that involves a lot of killing and shooting which leads to some really good action scenes. The gang of good guys (vampire hunters) got killed quite easily and right at the start, so now it's up to only two survivors of the gang to stop the Master of the vampires.
Sounds good, however, as we progress, the film keeps getting worse and worse. Storyline have some holes and unexplained bits in it, and it just sounds really ridiculous. The dialogues were really bad; some of them were simply laughable. Acting is not so bad, but it isn't really good either. James Woods were meant to play a badass vampire hunter, but instead he just looked really pissed off rather than angry. He didn't seem to care about his role, which probably affected the whole film atmosphere. Daniel Baldwin was not that good either; he looked too depressed and just didn't fit into his character. Sheryl Lee wasn't that bad, even though we don't really get to see her doing much during the film. Tim Guinee was one of the better performances, but best performance was produced by Thomas Ian Griffith. He played the Maser of the vampires and his acting was really good. His performance was really creepy, and he made this look like a real vampire movie.
Special effects were good, not too much blood or gore involved which is good, because too many special effects can ruin this kind of movie.
So in conclusion "Vampires" is pretty bad, in fact it should be much better, considering it was directed by John Carpenter who is a good director in my opinion. I loved the way Carpenter decided to try something new, but he didn't manage to direct his idea well which led to a failure.

visually this film is great, its a pity the scrpit wasnt quite as good as it should have been.
the script is really quite cheesy but the film is visually appealing -
This is a sick flick, typical Carpenter, intense thrilling action sequences with a chilling score and great one-liners delivered perfectly by James Woods, also the ending is ridiculous.

One of John Carpenters better films, which isn't saying much! Most of his movies, that I have seen, have been mediocre or worse.
-
For some reason I always liked this tale of vampire hunters. Maybe it's the bad one liners from James Woods... maybe it's the gang of vampire masters... but whatever i is, I found it interesting.
-
Thomas Ian Griffin plays a great vampire! The rest of the cast sucks. Woods tries too hard. Wasn't as blood as it should've been.
-
very enjoyable vampire flick, its your typical leave your brain at the door mindless gore fun because you do over think it you will probably come up with much better avenues than the plot decides to venture down, even the shocks are extremely anticipated even for the most lethargic viewer. But do not be mistaken this is a very fun movie to watch and it reeks of style. fans of the genre will be fans of this.

James Woods is the perfect guy to hunt vampires, and badass vampires at that. He just doesn't give a damn about much, and is totally smug about anything he does. IF he were like any of his characters in real life, he would so get beaten up, but in this movie, it works.

I enjoyed this film (I am always prepared for newer horror films to be rubbish), exciting and interesting. It didn't explain some questions I had (why did a vampire hunter have no idea about the origins of vampires till halfway through the film? What effect does killing the master have?), but I'll let it off. I wasn't too keen on the main character - I'm not sure if he was supposed to be likeable, but Sheryl Lee was good casting.
-
It started off a little bit too From dusk till Dawn with the action, but once the gothic master vampire came out it improved a lot.

John Carpenter is one of the best horror directors there are so I was at least expecting a decent vampire film in this but it didn't quite achieve decent. Disappointment considering his other very good films. The beginning wasn't bad but it did set the tone for the rest of the film as just going downhill from that point. The acting was nothing special and at times forced and important scenes. Carpenter really didn't seem to get the best out of the actors which really let the whole film down. The plot had potential but it just didn't work. I got bored with it easily and kept getting distracted by other things because I couldn't stay interested. Not a film I would recommend unless your a die hard Carpenter fan.

in True John carpenter style, Gritty no nonsense with 2 strong main actors Woods and Baldwin and a solid plot throughout ... You will find yourself showing a certain amount of Sympathy for the vampires too

wow what a movie...ive just seen this 4 the 1st time n think that its bloody brilliant...this is a really entertaining movie..this has a good cast of characters throughout n i think that james woods is amazing in this movie...this is just a good vampire movie 2 watch i think that this is a load of funn n its really enjoyable :) i still think that thomas ian griffith was pretty good in this movie ( i think he plays the main vampire bad guy) this is a very gory film but i think that its still so funn

so so movie,
but i liked one think and that reminded me on moonspell (portuges metal band) video Everything invaded is when vamp's rise from the earth in day light but thats it heh -
I'm usually a big Carpenter fan, but this movie was pretty wretched.
The beginning shows promise. Lots of gore, cheesy one liners, and innovative ways of disposing of vampires. After that, however... it's just more of the same old crap you see from a usually terrible genre.
James Woods just may be the least appealing star of any of Carpenter's films. He's completely unconvincing as a badass, and has little to no charisma. Roddy Piper was better in They Live - and he's not a professional actor.
For a film about a head leader and a whole bunch of evil followers - check out Prince of Darkness, which I feel to one of the more underrated Carpenter films. For a good vampire film... well, there's Near Dark, and i'm pretty much stumped beyond that.
This was terribly boring as it was so cliche and predictable, and there wasn't a single character worth caring about. Absolutely the worst of John Carpenter... although I have been avoiding Ghosts of Mars. -
Great potential, comes across as a low budget made for tv sci-fi channel movie. The characters depth is muddled and you just can't care about them much. If you catch it on tv, don't bother renting. Really on the f-word is cut out, the rest left intact.

Ugly, uncompromising western / vampire movie with an epic touch, lots of violence and bravery -- just the way I like it :)
-
I was a big fan of the book this was based on. Unfortunately the movie bears little resemblance to the book. I give a couple of stars for the great New Mexico locations.
-
Director, John Carpenters best film to date. A masterpiece. Slick, stylish, cool and endlessly thrilling. A blood-thirsty classic of a horror film. Loaded ith exhilerating action and suspense. James Woods has never been better.
-
Could have been good. They really wanted to do an update to the vampire myth and they had a good start just not a good story. I liked the fact that they all worked for the vatican and that the vamps were a little harder to kill than we were led to believe but it started to get boring and predictable halfway through.
-
I love vampire movies, but John Carpenter's take on the whole thing is so bad. His movies are so corny.
-
I still remember the first time I saw this movie - I was about nine or ten years old, and while my mom was cleaning at my big brother's house, I spent my time watching his videos. Vampires was one of them, and when I watched it for the very first time, it made a permanent impact on me. I was very impressed, and watched it over and over again. I never get bored of Vampires, and I think thanks to this movie I became such a horror movie freak.

THe idea of the Vatican having vampire hunters is cool. But other than that this steaming turd turns watery as soon as the first line of dialogue is spoke. James Woods was so bad. He is so not threatening in a role that calls for him to be. Actually Carpenter should of dug deep into his past and cast Kurt Russell in the role of Jack Crow. But acting aside, this film still sucks. What happened to you Carpenter.

So, so bad, it's almost good. Well, when Daniel Baldwin is a pivotal character, you know you're in for a treat. James Woods on the other hand, there are no words to describe him. He is the ultimate asshole in every film, but it always works. He definitely brings presence to this horror film that attempts to be a western. The five stars are basically due to Woods asking a 600 year old vampire ?how his cock is working??
