Fantastic short film, all made by one man on a mac. Voices Of A Distant Star is the story of a future intergalactic war, and young couples seperated by minutes, months, and eventually years communicating via texts, in one of the most entertaining mov...(read more)ies about long distance relationships Ive ever seen (the first one with space fights anyway). The direction alternates between simple objects and images caught in daytime shadows, and grandiouse sweeping shots of ultra violet skys and vast alien landscapes and space. Likewise the plot alternates between introspective voice overs about longing and the passage of time, wonder at the magnitude and beauty at the pyshical world, and anime style space battles with giant mech soldiers, aliens who resemble T1000esque Crustaceans, and Space Vessels which look like swans. Emotionally and visually moving anime, about growing up and growing apart.

The best animated short I've ever seen! Easily one of the best short stories ever. :) The animation is enticing and the english-language voicing is exceptional! :)

God knows I'm no japan-phile. I tend to only like films by Hayao Miyazaki. But, on the suggestion of a friend I looked up this film. Its terrific and moving. The fact that it was all created and animated by a single person makes it that much better. One of the best films I've seen recently.

A short film by Makoto Shinkai, showing his early promise to be the next great anime film director of his generation.

hmmm, the plot itself doesn't strike me as my type, but i like the little back story of how it was created. i love creativity and intuition!

A beautifully animated short film. A story about separation and longing during war, plus giant mechanized robots blowing up aliens. Ok. the robots and aliens are really just part of the backdrop.

The story is actually quite moving; it's impressive how much emotion the film packs into the short running time.

The animation is, for the most part, simply gorgeous. The backgrounds in particular. It's mind-boggling that one person made this on their home computer, as it easily rivals or even exceeds the work of professional animation studio releases from the same year. It was obviously a labor of love.

4 stars for the work itself; I haven't given it any kind of bonus just because one person made it. Even though it might deserve one.

This Was Brilliant. My Career Is In Graphic Designment, Therefore I Tend To be Critical On Designs of Video Games and Mostly Anime Movies. But This One Seemed like It Was Spent ime On. And the Plot was Excellent. XD

Beautiful and poetic anime short. Not the best character animation. But the backgrounds are great. Nice soundtrack.

That was an interesting and moving anime film! "Voices Of A Distant Star" is space drama of two lovers divided by war and space travel that got me into the action. Wow....can you believe that everything- the voice acting, the graphics- was done on the computer by only one person? Yes, and I already believed that- the anime was created by Makoto Shinkai. I give "Voices Of A Distant Star" four blinking stars from the sky!

Makato Shinkai did a really good job with this. Sometimes it's hard to believe he didn't have any previous drawing lessons. Unfortunately, it's a real tear jerker.

incredible. it's a must see nodoubt. There are very few animations that are this eyepleasing, and even fewer where emotions run as high as this - the tough parts of this film are reminiscent of when Baloo appears dead at the end of the Jungle Book. In other words, it can be heartbreaking! :D

It was well done for someone who created it on their home comp! This guy should be proud of the product. Thanks for all the hard work!

Makoto Shinkai self made 30 minute anime using his own iMac. The story about a long distance relationship between a boy and a girl, through a cellphone .. very deep and touching ! a great one !

Written, voiced, and drawn by 1 man. Short sci-fi story that imparts a sense of wonder, with time dilation to boot.

The ultimate love put on hold. Mikako, a talented mecha warrior fighter has been chosen to go on a mission deep into outer space leaving behind on earth her boyfriend, Noboru.
Since grade school these two have been all for eachother, even hoping they could go to the same high school with eachother. Then the call of duty came in and just like that, she was gone. Travelling further into space, increasing the distance of the two young-lovers. And their only means of communication is via text messaging, but since the distance between them is so large, the messages cannot be received for the least, a year. This troubles them both, Mikako because she doesn't really know if he gets them or if he'll just forget her. Noboru actually thinks of letting her go, try to forget about her and move on, is his theory, but we find out that is not working for him. [eight] Years pass by and Mikako is still her same 15-year-old self and Noboru is 24. Still hoping that their love for eachother will withstand the war with the Tarsians.
All this and much more emotion comes out of this short film, more story-driven, as there is hardly any character development (the whole point). It's a bit confusing, some things were probably lost during the adaptation from manga to movie or in the English translation, but it's great to watch. I'm pretty sure the love they have for eachother lasted longer than that war (:

It's so sad and nostalgic, and yet so beautiful. Breath-taking in every essence, I loved the musical score, but it seemed a little too short for a movie...
