A lot of bad things have been said about this movie concerning it's lack of originality or over-reliance on special effects and, having never been a fan of Andrew Lau style films or HK imitations like 'The Matrix, you could say my expectations were quite low. However, in the end I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw.
Kim Kyung Soo is a problem child who has been transferred between several schools due to his wreckless behaviour. When he finds himself relocated to Volcano High School it would appear that he has found his greatest challenge to date as within this school lies a secret manuscript that supposedly offers it's bearer the chance to rule the world. Therefore, the stage is set for several martial artists to lay down challenges to become the owner of this important document. As Kim finds himself drawn into this web of rivalry he must make the choice between siding with one of the factions or going after the power for himself.
It's probably fair comment to say that 'Volcano High' doesn't exactly break new ground but to call it dull and unoriginal does not do it justice. Okay, the plot does occasionally create a certain degree of confusion and there aren't any revolutionary advances in film making but as a stand-alone action film it does more than just a few things right. With it's comic book approach that lies somewhere between Japanese anime and the 'Streetfighter' computer game, 'Volcano High' offers humourous, larger-than-life performances combined with exaggerated visuals that give the film an energetic feel which sweeps the viewer through the running time. These factors are also complemented by the dark and brooding locales that showcase almost colourless backgrounds, all of which are expertly shot with bucket loads of style. I ask you, what more could any action fan ask for?
When it comes to the new breed of action, I (along with many other long term HK movie fans) have found myself struggling to get to grips with the special effects induced wire-fu that is filling all the big budget blockbusters but with 'Volcano High' I was strangely accepting and captivated by the action sequences. For me, the major difference between this film and others that have come before it is that it never disguises that it is a supernatural flick with superhero type characters so it doesn't build up any expectations about the action you are about to witness. Instead, you are treated to well choreographed fight sequences that use just the right amount of CGI effects to represent the special powers whilst never allowing the computer effects to dominate the combat. This is coupled with succinct direction that shows all the action properly without an abundance of slow motion or choppy editing techniques. To be honest, if we must accept that the golden days of 80s Hong Kong action are far behind us then this is how I would like the new style to be presented.
Overall, regardless of whatever else has been said about this flick, there are still many reasons to recommend it. Watch it for the humourous leading performers; watch it for the exhilarating action; watch it for the stylish directorial approach but mainly, watch it because it's FUN! It has it's faults but what film doesn't so I mark it down as another very successful entry into the action genre that truly deserves four stars.

Saw the MTV version, thought it was visually impressive with a neat anime feel. Then I saw the Korean version...and now I hate the MTV version. But if you ever wanted to see how an anime would look as a live action film, then check this out.

I saw the MTV version, and man they biffed it up! What a mess! Those famous black rappers' voices did NOT work, I don't know what the American producers were thinking!

But then I watched the first part of the original Korean version, and since I saw the whole movie already I didn't even use subtitles cuz I knew what was going on. It totally saved the movie! The plot was alot more understandable, the characters more likable, the music much more fitting, and no stupid daydream! :D I'm gonna have to watch the whole original sometime now.

Thought it would be a rip off of the X-Men, but was surprised to find a comedy action film different from what I expected.

What the hell is Snoop Dogg doing here. Weird. But anyway, the one I saw had no Snoop Dogg in it so I'll talk about that. I quite loved the movie. Messy plot or whatever the hell it was and fascinating fight scenes. It was very good, but the last fight scene was a littl bit of a wimper, the one where the new guy meets the Jang Ryang guy was slightly better, the mood works better, the last should be better but the shots and even the cinematography was not brilliant. Overall, the effects was brilliant and the editing was quite insane.

Not bad action movie but it takes a while before the lead actor finally fight for real. And towards the end Jang Ryuk suddenly is able to fight a few of the highly skilled teachers which is too far fetch to me.

that movie poster is s**t because there is no rappers in the UK version as we repect the asian movies. in our version we can have it dubbed in a pretty normal voice or the koren which is normal. this film is strange but funny i did enjoy this movie. but f**k the rap thats on the cover of this its bulls**t.
i like rap but using there voices seems stupid putting them on a koren movie it wouldnt sound right but thats america for you. btw i live in the UK

This is not the film that I saw. The version that I own on DVD has nothing whatsoever to do with rap. Apparently the Yanks shit on foreign culture wherever possible. The Asian version is actually a good martial arts film as long as you don't mind an incomprehensible plot.

I've seen the one without the hip hop dubbing, just subtitles, that makes it sooooooooo much better. So the one I have seen is what I am rating.

For a korean movie, it was pretty good. There was one scene which had great comedic value -- i laughed hard at it.

Although I found the MTV version amusing, I prefer the original Korean version. It's like an asian Matrix. How can you not like that?

Ha! There's a dubbed version! Gimme the original any day.

This was the movie that put korea on the map for me. Never really knew they were on the movie scene until this... & what a way to make a splash! The effects (especially anything with water) was just brilliant! Yeh, ok, the plot is a little "watery" but the characters are fabulously comically drawn to bring you into this high school world of high powered heroes on a journey that you want to be part of.

& did i mention the special effects! Awesome!

Don't bother with the "MTV version" that's on this disc. It takes a fun movie and just makes it stupid.

An overacted and sometimes tedious Korean action flick about a super-powered kung fu high school that has some slick effects and fun action sequences.

Comically overacted, Volcano High has a very fun story and a good host of characters behind it. The action scenes are also very well done. Unfortunately the plot falls flat about half way through, but the film is still very entertaining. Beware of the dubbed version, though, and watch the original.

If you get to watch this movie, see it in its true glory. Not this bastardization of over dubbing it with no talent rap star hacks in attempt for Hollywood to ween money from you.

Watch ther Korean version with English subtitles. The Mtv dubbed version is awful and cuts out some key parts to the story...as well as changes the story itself for the sake of "hip" sounding dialogue. The Korean verison is fun and has a great storyline running through it...plus a shower scene that is not in the dubbed version.
