A great story of a daring train escape made by the members of a POW camp in WWII. A good mix of action, suspense, and humour played out beautifully by its stars. The last 15 minutes of the movie are pure nail-biters.
WW2 Uniform fashion show as action vehicle for Sinatra to show his acting chops and do a little revisionist history for the Italians. Edward Mulhare and Trevor Howard stand out here. This is more roller-coaster ride than serious documentary, so action fans will love it, purists will turn up their noses with distain.
Solid action directing by Marc Robson, who also helmed the superb "Lost Command". Get the butter out for your popcorn and get to crunchin'...
After having seen the last 10/15 minutes of this film several times I have finally managed to see the whole film. Well worth watching, a good balance between humour, drama and action. Oh, and a great story as well.
Sinatra makes a compelling performance as a Army POW who is one of the highest ranking men there. They decide to escape from the camp which they do in a train slated to go to Germany, but instead goes to Switzerland thanks to the Italian engineers along the way. Of course, no one knows it's a escapee train and for the most part, they have some hairy moments since folks think theyre German and all. Will keep you glued to the seat.
I was never one that believed Sinatra was that great an actor. He's unparalleled as a performer on stage, but as a movie actor? No way.
Solid WWII escape drama that concentrates on spectacle rather than suspense more than most. A decent war cum action film on the whole.
A story of one mans struggle to do the right thing and how the good of the many out weight the good of the few.
A war movie thats a man's movie in most cases. A very good war film well acted by Frank Sinatra, and Trevor Howard. Entertaing and filled with action.
Even though 'some people' say that Sinatra was never in the war so he can't play a war hero, this movie proves otherwise.
