    Waiting for Heaven is a road film set in the 17th century Ottoman Empire. Croatian recruit Eflatun, a master miniaturist, has abandoned his art after losing his wife and child. To immortalize them, he begins to draw them in the Western style forbidden by Islam. But the ?transgres...( read more)sion? further afflicts his already shattered soul. He is then appointed by the grand vizier to paint the portrait of Prince Danyal, who has led an uprising against the sultan in Anatolia. Eflatun has no choice; accompanied by bodyguards, he sets off or revolt-stricken Anatolia? Through Eflatun?s experiences, Dervis Zaim tackles issues such as the East-West divide, the relationship between the virtual and the real and the artist-power conflict. And using the unusual concepts of time and space characterizing miniature paintings, he shapes the narrative and aesthetics of the film. Waiting for Heaven is a noteworthy stylistic endeavour that adds a new dimension to the traditional approach to history in Turkish cinema.
