The Carson westerns were considered near the bottom of the ladder, prestige-wise, and played only the most desperate rural theaters. In The Walloping Kid a former prize-fighter turned rancher (Carson) masquerades as a bandit in order to infiltrate a gang of outlaws. Following the demise of the short-lived Carson series, Bullock returned to his old moniker and played mainly heavies.
