  This is a very good and slick looking action flick, I thought it was gonna be a silly martial arts fest that goes straight to the video shop, but this is actually really good. It looks great, the action and stunts are gritty, real looking and believeable, unlike alot of Jet Li and Statham films. The plot is abit confusing here and there, lots of twists and revenge battles going on and the ending is alittle flat but the main twist is good. Very high body count and plenty of blood, with some lovely looking car chases for good measure, a surprising thumbs up.

  Such a fun and rewarding face off movie between the greatest modern action stars, Jet Li and Jason Statham. It's a lot better than it should be and throws itself into the ranks of Face/Off and Universal Soldier. It's got double crossing, Yakuza assassins, corrupt cops and a lot of one-liners and action. It doesn't have the best ending, which sort've takes away from the rest of the movie. However, it's still really fun and more than you might expect. There's no cheesy elements and it can be taken seriously for the most part. If anything, it's Jet Li and Jason Statham together onscreen.

Their acting is well done as are their phyisical commitments to the fight sequences. It's shocking, jaw-dropping and mind blowing. Thrilling, riveting and incrediably exciting. It's going to keep you kicking and screaming for more. Fuelled by tremendous non-stop action and electrifying suspense with twist and turns that will take your breath away to it's explosive conclusion. It's unstoppably heart-pounding and absolutely unforgettable. Adds lots of fuel to it's fire and never goes out for a second. It's one awsome standoff that you wont forget.

  Hey, if you're interested in seeing a mostly-violent flick with a big body count, gratuitous in nature half the time, and a lot of hostility, anger, betrayal, a big twist near the end and tons of testosterone, then this movie is for you. If you want a quiet, low-key thriller, skip this one: this is a somewhat brainless blood-and-guts, slice 'n dice ( not that I'm complaining about that). In other words: know what you're going to get here. We get many, many gunshots to head., long range to up-close-and personal, swords into mouths and through back of head and through just about any other body part, a car chase, motorcycle chases, a few bare breasts and a bunch of attention-grabbing scenes of brutality, which definitely outnumber the quieter scenes. Jason Statham has played this kind of role in numerous films the past few years. Jet Li.....well, you know him. Statham versus Li? Yes, but not really. The two are only in the same scene twice, once for a couple of minutes of Jason giving threats and Jet standing there passively, and then in the finale fight scene. The latter, unlike most of these action films of today, is not overdone and go on and on. It's just about the right length. The best part of this ultra-violent movie dealing with rival Asian gangs and FBI agent (s) in the middle in the BIG twist near the end of the film. At least it makes this a little more than a brainless action movie. I think it's kind of cool, although don't try to analyze it for credibility. While a number of reviewers here weren't happy that the two big stars weren't on the screen at the same time for long, my choice for under-played actor is Luis Guzman, who is always very interesting but didn't have many lines here. I'd like to have seen his part a lot bigger, and I would have liked to see Statham tone it tone and sound a little more intelligent in his role. In real life, FBI agents have a lot more class. Having said that, I still enjoyed the film because I knew in advance what it was, that it wasn't Li's best effort nor Statham's but it sufficed for a 100-minute diversion. I was looking for action...and I got it. Worth a look

  Weak script, weak execution, but I grew up on films like this, so I was still able to engage myself in many of the film's more intriguing assets like Ryu Ishibashi playing the Japanese yakuza leader or Corey Yuen's wicked choreography.

Hey, when your friends want to watch a movie, what are you going to do? <p>Okay, so this is messy. Agreed. And if I'd had input on it, I'd have had Li play the original partner in prosthetics. At least that way he'd be similar, especially in voice. I'm not even finding the unchangeable eyes bit convincing. <p> But you know what? My Badger flixster buddy James once asked me point-blank how on earth I could add Jason Statham to my all-time favorite actor list. Well, it's precisely because of roles like this. I think that Statham is one of the great stone-cold butt-kickers on screen today. I still wish, as I said a while back, that they would break the "Bond formula" and have a different actor play Bond in each new Bond film. I'd like to see Statham get a crack at it, and I'd also like to see both Fiennes brothers be given a shot. <p> Jet Li is a solid action man as well, and this really could have been a much better film with a little careful thought. Although I should give it fewer stars, I'm giving it a solid three.

  It looked like a "put big star A with big star B and a fight scene at the end and we make $$$" type of film. I have to admit after watching it last night it was actually pretty darn good? as a Hong Kong action movie. Let me explain. There was only one fight scene between Jet Li and Jason Statham. It wasn't very good, and it happened in the last five minutes of the movie. I think I'll watch "The One" again just to see a good fight sequence between these two. Most fight scenes were reminiscent of the Crazy 88's fight scene in Kill Bill Vol. 1, where many goons died in horribly bloody ways. Actually, with all the broken limbs, it had a bit of classic Steven Seagal in there too. When it all got too over-the-top, I actually started laughing. The fight scene to watch for is a sword battle that Jet Li has in the climax of the film (NOT with Jason Statham!). Freakin' beautiful. There was a whole lot of talking in this movie. As it turns out, that's because there was a very deep, involved plot. Every action of Jet Li's character, "Rogue", has an obvious meaning. If you watch carefully, you'll find that they all have a deeper significance as well. There are suspected plot holes, character outline flaws and storyline twists that eventually work out to be red herrings in advance of a great finish to the story. There's no "OMG Ah HA!" moment, but definitely an "oooOOOOOooooh! Now I get it!" and everything falls into place. In fact, looking back on the film, it really doesn't feel like a Hollywood film at all. It is in almost every way a Hong Kong film. If you watch Infernal Affairs (precursor to Scorsese's Oscar winning The Departed), or any other grey-market DVD you can get your hands on you'll see where WAR gets its influence. The similarities between WAR and HK action flicks are many: Cool twist ending, Triads, Yakuza, dishonour = decapitation, motorcycles, and Jet Li as a hired assassin. I wanted to giggle every time he said "I have no master". It's like his version of "I'll be back". In conclusion, if you like HK action movies, go see WAR. Aside from the illogical scenes of Chinese ex-pats speaking English to each other with great difficulty, it will look exactly like a HK movie (right down to the Filmed In Vancouver credits). If you're not really familiar with the genre, then it probably won't be the kind of movie you'll enjoy unless you like creative and very, very bloody battles involving simultaneous use of swords and gunplay? ?in which case you should probably see a psychiatrist.

The story is very generic, even its "supposedly" huge plot twist. The movie is immensely boring unless Jet Li is on the screen. I have nothing against Jason Statham, but his character was just plain boring. This is a disappointment in so many ways because it had potential to be something great. It's a pity.

  A dumb Jaso Statham actioner without the dumb corny fun. In fact it tries to make itself needlessly complicated with daft twists to make people think "OOOOOH clever" but it is simply annoying. The action is good, the editing is fast without much focus, simply cutting to images accompanied by loud noises. Li acts with his fists and the whole seriousness just makes it less fun. A nice sword fight, an okay car chase and the like will certainly satisfy those wanting a Statham/Li film but for those who are unsure it is pretty pointless.

  Not nearly as bad as I ever thought it would be... That said, I expected a lot more martial arts....There's not much going on until the end of the movie. It's not really good...but it wasn't that bad either.....

  This was disappointing. Fun action movie, but disappointing nonetheless. Convoluted and contrived. Completely ridiculous in some parts. At the same time, unforgivingly brutal and unrepentantly violent. Jason Statham is a great watch as always regardless of script. He plays agent Crawford to Jet Li's "Rogue." As Crawford's obsession consumes him and the body count mounts it crescendos, but falls on deaf ears as the ending is simply slapped together with bubble gum and paste (they could have a least used duct tape!) I had a lot of hope for Jet Li since the marvelous epic "Hero" and then working with Luc-Besson on "Unleashed." Even "Fearless" was a great traditional tribute to the genre (and I thought his swan song for it as well), but this movie was just stale. If you need a martial arts/shoot 'em up bloodfest then...this will be good for the night, but don't expect anything great.
