We're Not Married

David Wayne, Eddie Bracken, Eve Arden, Fred Allen, Ginger Rogers

Anyone who thinks everyone in the 1950s held marriage sacred hasn't seen We're Not Married, one of the more gleefully cynical snipes ever aimed at that fundamental institution. Five couples discover t...( read more  read more... )hat their marriages aren't legal--Ginger Rogers and Fred Allen as a bickering pair of beloved radio personalities; Marilyn Monroe as a beauty contestant with her oppressed house-husband, David Wayne; Eve Arden and Paul Douglas as a chatty pair who've run out of conversation; Louis Calhern as a kindly tycoon married to gold-digging Zsa Zsa Gabor; and Eddie Bracken as a soldier who's just learned his not-quite-wife Mitzi Gaynor is pregnant. Into their lives comes a letter from the government revealing the truth about their unions, and suddenly everyone considers what their lives might be, if only... A delightful, slightly screwball comedy. A hidden gem!

Lots of big stars in this one. My favorite was the marriage of Zsa Zsa Gabor.

Marilyn Monroe is exactly everything that I despise in celebrities and the opposite sex. Her life was always about being noticed for her body, and she would do anything to be noticed and to be rich. She is most famous for having an affair with who I deem to be the worst presid...( read more)ent ever, JFK. She also has an annoying voice and could not act for crap. As far as her movies go, you can count me out, for I would rather spend a day listening to Whoopi attempt to sound intelligent.

I'd never even heard of this movie before, but it turned out to be quite a charming little flick. It tells the stories of five different couples that find out they're not legally married. Some are delighted to get the news... others, not so much. Each segment is fun and, overall,...( read more) sweet, although it's got a lot of cynicism along the way. The Fred Allen/Ginger Rogers plotline was wrapped up a little too tidily to convince me, but other than that, quite fun.

An interesting story line about 5 couples who after having been married after awhile, find out that their marriage wasn't official and the results of that knowledge!
