Meanwhile, Bob Wiley is a recluse who is so afraid to leave his own apartment that he has to talk himself out the door. When Bob is pawned off on Leo by a psychiatrist colleague, Bob becomes attached to Leo. Leo finds Bob extremely annoying. When Leo accompanies his wife Fay, his daughter Anna, and his son Siggy to a peaceful New Hampshire lakeside cottage for a month-long vacation, Leo thinks he's been freed from Bob. Leo expects to mesmerize his family with his prowess as a brilliant husband and remarkable father who knows all there is to know about instructing his wife and raising his kids. But Bob isn't going to let Leo enjoy a quiet summer by the lake. By cleverly tricking the telephone operator at the doctor's exchange, Bob discovers the whereabouts of Leo and his family. Despite his phobia about traveling alone, Bob somehow manages to talk himself onto a bus, and he arrives in New Hampshire. Leo's vacation comes to a screeching halt the moment he sees Bob. With his witty personality and good sense of humor, Bob quickly becomes an annoyance to Leo, but not to Fay, Anna, and Siggy, because they think Bob is fun while Leo is dull. Fearing that he's losing his family to Bob, Leo frantically tries to find a way to make Bob go back to New York, and it's not as easy as Leo had hoped. Leo finds himself stepping outside the law to try to get Bob to stay away from Fay, Anna, and Siggy -- Leo slowly goes berserk, and makes plans to kill Bob.

charismatic and a lot of fun, murray has a way of picking comedy roles that seem typical and are anything but. more depth than expected, the chemistry between murray and dreyfuss works almost too well.

This movie was stupid to me as an 8-year-old. Now I think it's absolutely hilarious.

[Leo is strapping a bomb to Bob]
Dr. Leo Marvin: "This is black powder, Bob. A teaspoon of it can blow up a tree stump.
Bob Wiley: How much you got there?
    Dr. Leo Marvin: Twenty pounds.
Dr. Leo Marvin: You understand, right? There's no other solution. You won't go away. ...( read more)
    Bob Wiley: Yes, I will.
Dr. Leo Marvin: No, you won't. You're just saying you will, so that when I don't kill you, you'll show up again and make everyone else in my life think you are wonderful and I'm a schmuck. But I'm not a schmuck, Bob, and I'm not going to let you breeze into town and steal my family away just because you're crazy enough to be fun. "

Dr. Leo Marvin (Richard Dreyfuss) is at the pinnacle of his psychiatry career. His new book, Baby Steps, is such a huge success that Good Morning America's crew is coming to interview him while he's on vacation with his family at Lake Winnipesaukee. The day before he leaves, however, he meets a new patient,Bob Wiley (Bill Murray),who's about to change everything. Bob, in his own words, has problems. He's afraid of pretty much everything. But in just one session with Dr. Marvin, he realizes that he's finally found the man who can help him. So when Dr. Marvin announces that he'll be away until the end of the summer, Bob is beside himself. So, following the advice found in Dr. Marvin's life-changing book, Bob sets out to find his doctor back. When Bob shows up at Lake Winnipesaukee, Leo is horrified. Everyone else in the family, however, takes an instant liking to Bob and they welcome him into their home. He helps Leo's wife, Fay (Julie Hagerty), with the dishes, he learns how to sail with Leo's daughter, Anna (Kathryn Erbe), and he teaches Leo's son, Siggy (Charlie Korsmo), to dive. The longer Bob stays, the more Leo's family loves him and the more Leo tries to get rid of him using any method that works. But like the cat in the famous song, Bob just keeps coming back. It's side-aching, belly-laughing hilarious without being crude or offensive. The role of "Bob" seems almost tailor made for Bill Murray, and director Frank Oz clearly had a grasp on how to pull out of Murray a performance capturing the heart, soul and humor of the character.

I guess I liked it. It seems like most of the people who love this movie just really like the Bob character. The rest is pretty silly and rediculous.
