This movie is all Angela. You can feel her passion , fire, anger, happiness and suffering. the movie was intense and a must see. I love her in this movie , Yes it is my fav from Mrs. Bassett.
Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne are amazing as Ike and Tina Turner. This story covers The rock queens life story, and showing trials of not just women, but the struggles of colored (anyone, not considered caucasian)people. It covers the Queen of Rock's trials and hardships to reach the top again.
'What's Love Got To Do With It?' is one of the best musical biopics I've seen. No other captures the sheer energy that radiates from performance, or unravels such a hauntingly realistic display of a singer's personal life. Every musical number is directed so we feel we are watching it live, and the personal life of Tina Turner is so harrowing it's almost an invasion of privacy to witness such shocking acts occur behind closed doors.
Anna Mae Bullock was a timid but determined girl from Tennessee, abandoned and cared for in the middle of nowhere. After a reunion with her estranged mother and sister in her late teens she met the cool and charismatic Ike Turner; he recognised her talent and took her under his wing as a tutor, and later a lover. But as her fame grew so did his jealousy, and her rise to stardom is paralleled with a spiralling case of domestic abuse. She watches people stand by as she is beaten, and those she love turn against her.
As Turner, Angela Bassett is phenomenal. She may be lip-synching for the majority of the musical numbers, but it never prevents her from being Tina Turner in every possible way; on stage her movements are loud and flamboyant, and watching her transformation from an awkward and shy girl to a confident and strong-willed woman who overcomes major trauma to end up a success is astonishing. I don't knock Holly Hunter's performance in 'The Piano' at all - she was brilliant - but the Oscar should have gone to Bassett. I've never seen Laurence Fishburne act quite like this either; as Ike he never falls into the cliched trap of an 'evil husband', but is a man torn apart by jealousy, hurts those he loves and ends up on a bitter path of self-destruction.
'Whats Love Got To Do With It?' finds the perfect balance between drama and music. The stage sequences are full of kinetic energy and dazzling spectacle, and never feels over-done. It is then perfectly juxtaposed onto a backdrop of violence and hatred that forms the foundations of Ike and Tina's marriage; like many battered wives she initally makes excuses, blames herself and goes back to Ike time and time again. It lasts longer than it should have. In public he embarrasses her, then makes her seem hysterical.
Only through the discovery of Buddhism does Tina begin to find the strength to stand up to him, and fight back. It is both gut-wrenching and inspiring to see her final escape; the scene lasts less than a minute, but makes for one of the film's most powerful and enduring moments.
In the divorce court, Tina gave up rights to all royalties, publishing rights, investements, all in essence hers anyway. All she wanted was her name. And now, everyone knows the name. This film lets you appreciate the name.
'What's Love Got To Do With It?' is a bold, sensitive and compelling film, never doubting it's leading lady, never manipulating audience response. We watch the drama unfurl, and react accordingly. I have never been a fan of Tina Turner's music, although I suppose I have always sub-consciously admired her work. But now I would gladly listen, because I know the pain it cost, and the undeniable effort that was poured into it. For her music, she gave her soul.
wow i have just seen this movie 4 the 1st time n think that this is an ok movie 2 see..its pretty good life story/tale of the rock star tina turner..i think that the director of this Drama, Musical & Performing Arts movie had done a good job of directing this movie because you never know what 2 expect throughout this movie because theres shocks, twists, turns throughout this movie...i think that in this movie Angela Bassett really knew how 2 play tina turner cuz she plays the part of her in the movie really well n that i think that laurence fishbourne is brilliant throughout this movie..i think that this is a shocking story/tale but its quite interesting to see the rough n tough lifestyle of tina turner..she has made some good songs throguhout her time in the music business...this is a good showbiz biopic that includes laughs, tears, good music, n the costumes throughout the movie..laurence fishbourne is great as the musical partner/Svengali Ike in this movie n Angela Bassett was great as tina turner
I cannot say how many times I have seen this movie, however it gets easier to watch every time I see it. I am glad it is based on a true story to show that there is hope for victims of domestic violence- if they choose to fight back!
Angela bassett and Laurence Fishburne do Tina Turner justice in this true story. Think all the emotions Anger, happiness, Sadness!! Its all in this film! Definitely one to watch if you haven't seen it!!
Angela Bassett is amazing in this role, which is saying a lot considering whose shoes she had to fill. Miss Turner is truly one of my heroes. I find her life story to be one filled with inspiration and this film presents it with reverence and honor.
What a biopic should be. Give you insight into a life you are familiar with but know little about. I can't remember who won the Oscar that year, but I remember rooting for Angela Bassett. She hasn't come close to this performance since. And who didn't love to hate Laurence/Larry/Whatever Fishburne as Ike.
I know I shouldn't have laughed at such a thing but when Ike took off his boot to beat Tina, I lost it. It wasn't enough that he was beating her with his hands, he had to inflict more damage by using his boot. Fortunately Tina rose above all that and became a bigger star than that asshole.
OMG I LOVE THIS MOVIE AND I USE TO WATCH IT WHEN I WAS LITTLE AND I NEVER NEW THAT IT WAS RATED "R" BUT I STILL LOVED THIS MOVIE AND IM SO GLAD THAT TINA TURNER GOT AWAY FROM HIM CAUSE I DIDNT WANT TO GET ABUSED EITHER. I LOVE THIS MOVIE
Angela Bassett et Laurence Fishburne sont tous les 2 incroyables dans ce film. Wow! en meme temps on comprends la vie de Tina Turner, pas facile, quelle femme !
Very graphic, emotionally moving account of Tina Turner's singing career and abusive relationship with Ike Turner. This lady is brilliant, classy,& extremely talented and I've always admired her so much. She should have those legs insured by Lloyd's of London !! Angela Bassett scores 5 stars for her performance!
I love the music and the songs, but the way her husband traething her, that's wrong, he can't do that to his own wife, but i love the part where she fights back and he had it comeing, and i love the song "What's Love?", it came out the year where my sister is born, I love that song and "I dont' wanna fight no more" Tia Turner YOU ROCK!!! =3
On this film, Tina is always good, she always looks the best for all her people: she takes care of her husband's the last relationship kids, she says "keep the change" when she buys donuts, she always has a smile for the others, and she even mixes this bounty with foolishness such as her relationship with her mother and, of course, her husband who is a total monster. With this kind of characters so unreal, so exagerated, who are also part of an racist way of seeing black people, we never feel we saw Tina's life. We never (or at least I) understand what does she saw on Ike because he never stops being the bad guy. And the film about "Tina's life" is really a story about the beating she recieved.
Con decirles que ni a la misma Tina le gustó, aunque Basset para mí es una muy buena actriz y aquí lo demuestra, sentí que vi una pelìcula inferior, n siquiera la ambientación y la buena música me hicieron darle más de dos estrellas.
