  In this movie `Alice` Meg Ryan plays a psychologically troubled housewife who has a taste for alcohol. Her character isn't a very likeable person. She drinks, slaps her kids, drives drunk with her kids in the car, completely forgets about her kids while she's out on drinking binges... putting her children and her husband through a living hell. She goes into therapy and overcomes her problems, but now it is the man who has to try to live with a woman who's no longer the same one he once married. The first half of this film was ok, but once Alice was out of the clinic, it becomes a little more than a husband and wife having marital problems and the alcoholism becomes a side issue.

  Considering how many great actors & actrresses are in it, it is probably the WORST movie any of them have ever done. Meg Ryan gives a stirring speech near the end, but even it fails miserably by being too over the top. Nothing in it is interesting. A few funny lines spattered thru the film & a couple kids that are at times adorable are the only reason this film gets 1 star & not a 1/2 a star. If you feel the urge to see this film, shoot yourself in the groin & hit your head with a sledgehammer first, because yoyu are clearly looking for some form of torture & that will be more direct & likely, less painful than watching this garbage.

It dealt with realistic facts of life such as alcoholism and how it can affect a family. It was so sad to see the eldest daughter face in the movie, when she saw her mother drunken. Andy Garcia, who played the husband role, loved his wife deeply, but he was powerless to help her and to see his marriage fell apart. Meg Ryan was great as usually and this role was sure not an easy one for her. I loved the end, because it had some happiness for the characters.

  A perfect "happily ever after", humorous relationship and an incredibly romantic spontaneous spark constantly flying in their lives that seem to have no end finally hit an end when the woman needed to have her booze to keep up with the laugh and fun. And then when all the fun disappeared, the man is still there to take care of her and help her overcome her alcoholism. I believe romance plays a major role in marriage life but not a fake romance like candlelight dinner nightly and world travel four times a year. The true romance happens when the person still sticks around and support you to the fullest and keep whispering in your ear, "I will make sure you are being taken care of in every aspect in your life, as you would mine." This movie deserves alot of attention from all the marriage couples to reexamine the value of their marriage and to realize what it really meant when one exchange each other's wedding ring.
