Set at the turn of the century, Where Angels Fear to Tread -- based on E.M. Forster's novel of the same name -- is about a rich, upper-class British woman (Helen Mirren) who marries a poor young Italian (Giovanni Guidelli) while on vacation in Tuscany. Her snobbish, class-conscious British family is outraged, and they attempt to bring her back to her native England. After she dies in childbirth, the family tries to gain custody of the child.

Critic Reviews from Rotten Tomatoes

"The story's constant and unexpected turns do provide rewards, but the real value of the film is in the richness with which it presents moral and emotional conflicts, laying them out with sensible realism and power."
‑ Douglas Pratt, DVDLaser
"A richly nuanced comedy of manners about the affect of a foreign country and its culture on two provincial souls."
‑ Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat, Spirituality and Practice
"Where Angels Fear to Tread is slow and deliberate, but the film is so absorbing that the audience won't mind."
‑ Chris Hicks, Deseret News, Salt Lake City
