A Rage in Harlem (67%)

Plot: Sometimes movies are built around a great idea begging for a story, in this case pairing ballet legend Mikhail Baryshnikov with tap great Gregory Hines. The resulting storm of dance in White Nights...( read more read more... ), as one would expect, is great, but the story is a little forced. Baryshnikov plays (in parallel to his own life) a Russian defector to the U.S. who ends up a prisoner in the motherland after his plane is forced to land in Leningrad during an emergency. Hines is an American expatriate who gets involved with the situation. Director Taylor Hackford (An Officer and a Gentleman) punctuates an escape scenario and relationship dilemmas with as many dance sequences as possible, and the result is a wobbly, unconvincing tale with some furious footwork. Fortunately, performances carry the day, as the two male leads are both very strong as actors, and the supporting cast--Isabella Rossellini, Helen Mirren, and filmmaker Jerzy Skolimowski (Moonlighting)--is terrific. --Tom Keogh

The beginning of the movie was a little slow, but as it got going I got more into the movie. The ending was the best part. There are great dancing and acting in this movie.

This is the most emotional, deeply moving, passionate movie I have ever seen to date. Don't watch it on a day when you're feeling down--it's also a bit dark and heavy.

I watched this one a looong time ago! But it is a delight to see these two great dancers in action. Of course, this movie's about the evils of Communist Russia in the time of the Cold War. The character Mikhail Baryshkov plays- a Russian ballet dancer that reached world fame after escaping the Soviet Union. Unfortunately, his plane was about to crash into Soviet territory. He tried to burn his passport before the crash but.....you gotta see for yourselves, Folks!

Pretty hard going as the laughs seem a little forced. Light hearted enough to spend a rainy afternoon in front of the screen though. No thought needed.

The Dream Team of performance art genre dance movies. Worth watching if you're a fan of it but don't expect Kubrick. Take away the dancing and this is just a crappy politico movie.

The story isn't great, but good enough. The dancing is quite good, of course, and Baryshnikov doesn't suck as an actor. Hines was at the top of his game back then.

Although the Mikhail Baryshnikov is one of. or the best... this comes down to old American action movies. Where the other Russian actors are american and the story makes little sense... too much action for me.

the master of ballet, Mikhail Baryshnikov and one of the late great tap masters, Gregory Hines; mesh these two forms of dance together beautifully, it gives me chills seeing them dance together!

This movie is a bit a mirror of what was the 80's Cold War.
Though it does not have as much dance sequences as I would like, it shows undoubtadly was is Baryshnikov considered one, if not the most, brilliant dancer ever, and what great actor he can be. Some 80's Hits, convincing performances, drama enough, makes this movie worth it
