Biao Yuen, Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Sammo Hung Kam-Bo

"It's an epic!" howls one of the fighters in the free-for-all finale, overwhelmed by the sheer number of characters that get crowded into a single room, all pounding away at each other. Indeed, every ...( read more  read more... )comic actor and most of the leading action stars in Hong Kong in 1983 seem to have been squeezed into this amiable kung fu comedy--there are even tiny cameo appearances by several famous movie directors (Ann Hui, Tsui Hark, Wu Ma). This picture marks the debut of a loose-knit group of farce-action stalwarts, the Five Lucky Stars, stumble-bum reformed crooks who attempt to go straight by setting up a cleaning service, but can't seem to help getting into tons of trouble. The Stars went on to appear in several sequels, including My Lucky Stars. Jackie Chan, as a cop pursuing the hapless crooks, is essentially the straight man here, and he seems to be using a stunt double in some of his big scenes. This is a close as Chan ever got to phoning in a performance. --David Chute

Unlike Wheels on Meals this lavishes more attention to Sammo and his cast of regulars than to Jackie who plays the minor role. The beginning of the film set up the collaboration between 5 small time crooks as each of them gets caught in various wacky ways. The most surreal of the...( read more)se episodes involve Sammo who tries to rob a house only to discover a birthday party in ambush to surprise the birthday man, which incidentally is Sammo Hung the actor rather than the crook he plays. After getting out of jail, the group forms a house cleaning company. There's a plot involving counterfeit money and a cop played by Jackie Chan who cannot get a break, not to mention various hijinks and gags sprinkled in. Unfortunately the jokes here are rather lame and too silly to enjoy. One noteworthy scene involves Jackie chasing a couple of crooks on his skates and ends in one of the biggest car mega-pileup accidents ever. So I guess a lot of the credit goes to Jackie who does all the crazy stunts here.

LOVE SAMMO HUNG AND CHAN IS A GIVEN. GREAT COMEDY BLENDED WITH PRETTY WELL CHOREOGRAPHED FIGHT SCENES.

I liked this movie. It was pretty funny, but I was finding myself asking what is the plot. I still found it entertaining as hell though...

A Sammo Hung film which features Jackie Chan in a more or less cameo role. The plot follows five freshly released convicts in their pursuit of the straight life. Richard Ng really steals the show, surpassing both Sammo and Jackie with his role in this one!

Great movie. It shows more of the comedy and action that make both Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung so great. Can't wait to see more.

The first of the 'Five Lucky Stars' series. Great film!

The now infamous comedy moment where Richard Ng strips naked and walks around believing that he's invisible, while the other lucky stars make comments about his privates and attempts to watch a football game. Hilarious st...( read more)uff.

It's a shame Jackie doesn't have much screen-time though (about 15 mintues i'd say). Yet he gets his name slapped in front of Sammo's to boost sales. Which is misleading.

In my teens I have to admit that I did see a lot of Chans movies, but I never really liked them, except for the fights of course.
