Andy McPhee, Cassandra Magrath, Guy Petersen

It was supposed to be the vacation of a lifetime in the Australian Outback -- full of fun, sun and adventure. But, what happened to a trio of 20-something backpackers took a wrenching detour into the ...( read more  read more... )depths of unrelenting terror. Based on true events, "Wolf Creek" is the haunting story of their unthinkable ordeal -- a mounting white-knuckle nightmare so real it was destined to become horror legend. "Wolf Creek" is a startlingly intense motion picture experience of rapidly escalating dread and suspense. The chillingly believable events begin as freewheeling, college-aged pals Liz, Kristy and Ben head out for a holiday hike in stunning Wolf Creek National Park to see its mysterious meteor crater. When they return, their car won't start. Trapped in the vast emptiness of the wilderness -- all they can do is wait for rescue. Luckily, as night falls, along comes colorful local bushman Mick and his massive truck, offering a tow to safety. But, as the sun comes up the next morning, it becomes shockingly apparent that Mick has no intention of fixing their car or letting them leave the Outback...ever again.

Filmed on Mini-DV to give it a realistic feel, Wolf Creek is a real edge-of-your-seat horror. Based on a true story, but what really happened?

Wolf Creek has a completely standard basic story for this kind of genre movie - travelers in isolated location encounter sadistic nut. Despite this, it's what writer/director Greg McLean does with the details which makes a difference.

The outback locations are rendered with a ni...( read more)ce eye and evoke a sense of spooky isolation - anything could happen to you out here and no-one would know, much less be able to help. There is also the much discussed 'dark side of Crocodile Dundee' element - frankly, I can't believe it's taken so long for someone to conjure this one up, and McLean clearly delights in stabbing a knife through the heart of the mythical Aussie archetype. I think he's actually gotten to an uncomfortable, close-to-the-bone truth about the psyche of certain Aussie males, and John Jarret is eerily similar to the kind of individual one would encounter in many a country pub down under.

The fact that this is an Australian film also makes it a rare bird indeed. For some unfathomable reason, the Oz industry rarely does genre, and when it does, usually doesn't do it well. With this in mind, Wolf Creek is something of a breath of fresh air. Yes, it hews pretty closely to the codes and rules of its genre, but for the most part it does it well, and for my money, what works about the film is strong enough to make some of the weaker plot moments forgivable.

Will Gibson's HD camera-work is impressive, maintaining a consistent style from start to finish, aided by solid editing, score and sound design. Now maybe people will stop whining about how 'we can't make genre films here' and we might see some imagination and variety creep into Australian cinema.

An auspicious debut from first time Aussie writer/director Greg Mclean, Wolf Creek is a punishing film to watch. Not because it's inherently unwatchable - quite the contrary, in fact, due to the credible performances and a level of character development not normally associated with horror films. What makes it a challenge is the unrelenting realism of its violence, which is certain to render an uncomfortable and visceral effect on viewers. It combines the style of cheesy horror films and the flair of classic thrillers, the result being a film bound to give even the most seasoned thrill seeker nightmares.

Loosely based on actual events (the murder of British backpacker Peter Falconio in July 2001) and playing off the almost total isolation inherent in a cross-country road trip through Australia, the film follows the joyride of British twentysomethings Liz (Cassandra Magrath) and Kristy (Kestie Morassi) and their friend from Sydney, Ben (Nathan Phillips). The friendship among the trio, as well as a burgeoning romance between Liz and Ben, are presented casually and naturally, making the characters likable, despite the lack of concrete details revealed about their lives.

The trip takes a turn for the worst after Liz, Kristy and Ben return to their car from a hike at the remote Wolf Creek National Park. They discover that the engine in their wagon - an older, used vehicle bought on the cheap for the trek - won't start. Rather unexpected help comes in the form of a large tow truck driven by Mick (John Jarratt), a native Outbacker who assures the group that he can repair the car and just needs to tow it back to his place for parts. The friends come along relieved, hushing their mild suspicions when their tow seems to last an unendingly long time. Once at Mick's compound, the trio falls asleep by an open fire as he works on their engine.

The horror portion of the film begins with the ensuing scene as Liz awakes to find herself bound, gagged and alone in a room. A struggled escape leads her to hear Kristy screaming in agony, where, in an attempt to rescue her friend, Liz witnesses the utter depravity and mercilessness of their captor. Unlike more traditional horror films, Wolf Creek is not comprised of a series of suspenseful moments that build and resolve as the killer does his deeds. Instead, it's a rather bleak and disturbing window on a steady flow of tortures, with only the occasional - and short - spark of hope given to the tormented victims.

The film has definitely more qualities than flaws. For one thing, it's devastatingly real, which is probably responsible for the festival hype that surrounded it. It's also extremely well-filmed - the photography is simply gorgeous, from the sun-drenched beach to the sun-baked bush. The action is impeccably staged in a startlingly realistic way and the location work pretty impressive. McLean has also a good ear for naturalistic dialogue and there's a believable semi-documentary feel to the first half of the film, almost as if you're watching someone's travel video. The performances are good too, despite a couple of wobbly accent moments from Magrath and Morassi. The film also creates a memorable screen monster, in the shape of Jarratt's Mick - he's creepy enough in his first scene, let alone in the full horror of the rest of the film.

The main problem comes when the violence starts. Violence (of any kind) is expected and essential in any horror film, but here it becomes genuinely unwatchable. This isn't like a Hollywood slasher flick, where we laugh if, say, Paris Hilton meets a grisly end. These are likable characters and it's awful to see them tortured and suffering, especially when you remember that this stuff actually happened. Similarly, the violence is nasty, vicious and literally stomach-churning - you end up staggering out of the cinema or pausing the DVD, depressed, upset and angry at McLean for having put you through such a horrifying experience.

And for all its pitch-perfect characterizations, for all its reality, for all its tension, Wolf Creek lacks the big pay-off that horror films are expected to provide. The horror scenes are certainly real and traumatizing, but there are few of the "boo!" and shock moments, which, although often clichéd, are much of the reason we watch these films. The demise of some of the characters is realized with pathos, but a horror film should off them with a bang. When night comes, it is far too quickly day again. The ending comes so suddenly and graces the screen so fleetingly that it almost insults the audience. But it's certainly not painful enough an insult to taint the overall film.

Wolf Creek ends up an extremely well-made film, if completely void of any enjoyment factor. But then again, maybe that was the point. Mclean has furnished an impressive first feature, skilfully avoiding clichés in a genre particularly vulnerable to them and managing to convey a lot with just a little. Throughout, I found myself genuinely admiring the skill both behind and before the camera, while simultaneously searching for a torch so I could destroy the negative. This is a recommendation, I guess, but you'll have a really hard time taking anything from this film, except disgust for the human race.

Grim, nasty and mostly unpleasant. It does some nice things with a tired formula, though it has become apparent that now ALL slasher films must revolve around backpackers. Sure the unfamiliar territory becomes a character in itself which adds to the tension but it also means we g...( read more)et a bunch of hard rinking stoners who are hard to care for. Wolf Creek does a good job with some nice acting. The kiss scene is awkward sweet and very unlike an oversexed teen slasher. Dialogue is real and those uncomfortable moments are almost unbearable. The violence is almost unbearable in a finger nails down blackboard kind of way. Makes you grit your teeth without looking away. The killer is well acted, being a creepy nice guy who has obviously seen enough horror films to avoid the usual traps. The victims however have not, making the same stupid mistakes we've seen again and again. It's an uneasy flick as opposed to a horror as it is never frightening. The downbeat realistic ending is also a high low point.

The four actors fit into their respective roles nicely, though in the case of Jarrat's bushman Mick, nice isn't quite the right word. full review

ONCE AND FOR ALL THIS MOVIE IS NOT A TRUE STORY! While it is influenced by similar events (the trial for one of its influences was still on during filming so the release date had to be pushed back)this movie in and of its self is fictional.
It's like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, while the killer in that movie is based off a real killer, the events are entirely fictional. This movie is reminiscent of real murders/murderes but is a fictional story ONLY influenced by reality.
and the person who posted the website below, well i looked at that url and it doesnt exsist!
And seriosuly if you were Ben after going thorugh something like that, would you want to live in a less populated place eg. South Australia, or a big city where Mick is a lot less likely to pop up eg. Sydney?
also like someone below said they didnt really tie up some of the storyline, like how the guys truck was at the emu creek station!
my recommendation don;t watch this movie, its boring, not that gopod and not worth your time

it was a brilliant movie, i don't care if it was real or not because a)i watched it late at night on my own in my room b)torture scares me much more than a good story line.
great movie i hope they make more like this, i tuned in luckily when the one of the women was tied up in a room and had to save her friend from being shot with crossbows, yeah i agree how do they know the women's point of view but you might say hannibal lecter is scary but that isnt real (i think)

The ending is Absolutely shit because the main bad guy does not die

and it was obvious from the the start that the hillbilly was going to end up trying to kill them otherwise how would it of been a horror film

I really didn't get this film. How do they know what happened to the two girls if they had never been found? fair enough, the guy would have told most of the story...but he wasn't with the girls when they were being tortured and killed, so ? I suppose it was quite thrillery, but i expected it to be SO much better. Every scene which started, never really ended with a proper answer, if that makes sense. It sort of just cut off. Especially the bit where she was looking through the camera's and found theirs, and at the end of it, it stopped on one of his truck's. But where was he supposed to be? was he one of the people in the station? I was really confused. The best bit was probably when she got in the car and u heard his really creepy laugh, and then he stabbed her. That was freaky. And is it just me, or was there very very very little talking in this film? That confused me aswell. I wouldn't recommend it at all. Was very boring.

    To the 3rd comment.
Uhm, they guessed on what happened to the girls.
It is based on a true story.
And that guy, is still alive,
so obviously, he told the story.
And people are just making guesses on the girls.
    =/

like the person who wrote before me, they are right how did they know what happened to each of those girls, so it can not be based on a true story if they only thing they got right is it happened near wolf creek, It was a good movie. even some parts scared me, like when he cut the girls fingers off and then stabed her so she would not be able to move, that freaked me out, but how do they know that is something that happened. I have seen movies more better then this and things that are actualy facts not just guessing. MAGINE BASED ON A TRUE STORY THEY MIGHT HAVR ONE OR 2 THINGS RIGHT, THANK GOD I NEVER WASTED MY MONEY IT WAS ON TV
