  High Hopes, High Anxiety, High Heels. Good movie! The film makes you laugh much more than expected, but keeps its heart in the midst of all the appropriately titled trouble. It's too real to just become a comedy or a tragedy or a drama, this film is an intoxicating blur of emotions. This movie basically ends up being about womanly camaraderie, and the bond that ties all women in all walks of life together, I think. However, it's also got enough sex talk, women in underwear, zany situations, and even a degree of bathroom humor, that'll keep guys interested. PS. Keep watching after the credits. There's a cute little satirical interview with the "porn stars", conducted by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. It's not quite up to the level of the material in the rest of the movie, but still worth watching. Several women (and one girl) in L.A. are hiding something from someone else, or discovering something hidden from them. Maxine, a therapist, discovers her husband cheating on her with the mother of Charlotte, a 13-year old patient. Addy (the other woman) and her sister Doris have withheld from the girl the truth of her parentage. Holly, an adult film actor, isn't telling her friend Bambi how she feels about her, and another actor, Elektra, who discovers she's pregnant, hasn't told the baby's father that she loves him. A stuck elevator, a car crash, mid-air turbulence, a flight attendant, a shotgun-wielding bartender, and her roommate, who's a masseuse, help these women communicate.

I would say there's a problem here, but it's done so shamelessly that you kind've just go with it. The sense of humor is really unique and I liked the change of pace. The stories and characters are allowed to shine, due to the structure. This is made with the best intentions, to be fun and not take itself too seriously.

  FULL DISCLOSURE: I freely admit that the only reason I wanted to see Women in Trouble was because of the incredible number of blindingly hot women that are in it. Carla Gugino, Marley Shelton, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Adrianne Palicki, Cameron Richardson...do I really need to continue? I had little interest in whatever the movie was supposed to be "about", per se, I just wanted to see the hotties. And they did deliver the goods. But this is a review, so I guess I have to talk about something more than how hot the women were. This is one of those kinds of ensemble movies where the numerous characters are directly and indirectly connected. It's certainly not up to the quality of a movie like Magnolia, not even close. The comedic elements work sometimes, and sometimes they don't. The dramatic portions are the same way. I guess the best way to describe Women in Trouble, is three Lifetime movies mixed with a rather tame Cinemax skin flick and a really disturbing bestiality story. If that weird mix sounds great to you, then you'll love this. Everyone else should just tune out the talky bits and ogle these gorgeous women.

  <i>"High Hopes, High Anxiety, High Heels."</i> A serpentine day in the life of ten seemingly disparate women: a porn star, a flight attendant, a psychiatrist, a masseuse, a bartender, a pair of call girls, etc. All of them with one crucial thing in common. Trouble. <center><font size=+2 face="Century Schoolbook"><b><u>REVIEW</u></b></font></center> This movie works sort of like "Crash" or "Magnolia", with different characters having their own story lines that turn out to be related to each other in some way, and intersect at certain points in the film. Also like Magnolia, there's a lot of self-discovery and unburdening of the heart. It's about two thirds drama, layered within outrageous situations and humor. There are a lot of characters. I don't know how the writer kept them all straight. There's a porn star, a prostitute, a porn star/prostitute, a therapist, a flight attendant, a masseuse, and a couple others. Some of these are strangers at first, but form strong bonds, resulting, I think, from some natural female instinct to support each other in crisis. I'd like to run down the various crises they deal with, but to avoid spoiling things I'll just say they involve being stuck in an elevator, infidelity, porn, lesbian relationships, bestiality, and unusual sexual dysfunction, to name a few. This movie basically ends up being about womanly camaraderie, and the bond that ties all women in all walks of life together, I think. However, it's also got enough sex talk, women in underwear, zany situations, and even a degree of bathroom humor, that'll keep guys interested. It's also a great story with an outstanding script and superb performances that combined to have me completely absorbed by the end. I have to extend extra-special props to Adrianne Palicki (Holly, the call girl/porn actress), who had a provocative monologue near the middle of the movie that was impeccably and movingly delivered. I was completely entranced. PS. Keep watching after the credits. There's a cute little satirical interview with the "porn stars", conducted by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. It's not quite up to the level of the material in the rest of the movie (probably why it was placed after the credits), but still worth watching.

  When porn star Elektra Luxx(Carla Gugino) hears that she has to visit her doctor's office about her recent blood test, she fears the worst. So much so, she does not see Holly(Adrianne Palicki), a co-star, when she is backing out of the parking lot. So, Elektra is relieved to learn that she is in fact pregnant. After gathering herself and straightening her breasts, she is about to leave when she ends up trapped in an elevator with Doris(Connie Britton) who has issues of her own. And what of Holly, you ask? Well, she is fine after she is almost run over for the second time in the same day, this time by Maxine(Sarah Clarke) who is trying to get away from her philandering husband(Simon Baker). So, Holly and her best friend Bambi(Emmanuelle Chriqui) take her to a bar. With a very good cast, "Women in Trouble"(if somebody could point out Joseph Gordon-Levitt, let me know) gets off to a good start, playing the absurdist angle well in its exploration of a sisterhood of women from different backgrounds. But the movie's momentum slows to a crawl and the sexiness and silliness give way to talkiness and sentimentality. In the end, this is a valiant effort that feels sadly incomplete(either the focus needed to be tightened or more time given to all of the characters) and just sort of comes to a halt.

  Okay, forget that this is supposed to be a nod to Pedro Almodovar. On that score, it fails miserably. This viewer saw only the barest resemblance to one of Amlodovar's films. However, as a woman-in-trouble comedy, this worked, strangely. As the film unfolded, one was drawn into these various stories and began to feel real empathy for their various predicaments. The various lives depicted were loosely connected in creative ways, and there were several chuckle-inducing moments as well as wrenchingly tender moments. One of the funniest scenes in the entire movie comes at the end, after the credits, so stick around for that. These are not A-list stars, but their performances are decent, given the way this could have easily gone with the stereotypes and left the weightier issues on the cutting room floor, but kudos to the director for taking a chance and giving us a fairly entertaining slice of life.
