Critic Reviews from Rotten Tomatoes

"An almost magical example of how an artist of genius can take someone else's classic work and shape it to fit his own temperament without really violating it."
‑ Vincent Canby, New York Times
"The film's dreary exteriors (the trees without leaves, the buzzards on constant alert) evoke a landscape of spiritual unrest."
‑ Ed Gonzalez, Slant Magazine

‑ Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader
"Gains a power the other screen versions don't have through its unrelenting gothic ruthlessness."
‑ Dennis Schwartz, Ozus' World Movie Reviews
