Great movie goes for about 3 hours but not a dull moment. Kevin costner has some great movies back in his day this one has to be his best. Awesome shoot out scenes.

Gets the mood, pace and the attitudes of the times pretty well. I'd recommend it if you are interested in this story, and especially if you already know about Wyatt Earp. If not, it's going to be a bit slow for you.

I disagree that this is a must watch for anyone who likes this genre, it's just an average film. not bad, not too good either.

Strangely enough, Denis Quaid's character is pretty well made and I liked his acting here but Kevin Costner was kind of mediocre. Would be nice if they gave Gene Hackman a bigger role.

This movie is like 5 hours long. I couldn't sit through it all, it has a lot of parts that it could have totally done without.

First off, this is a huge cast of folks that brought this movie together. There were so many "name" actors I had trouble keeping track of them all.
I thought the pacing of the flick was well done considering the amount of story they had to cover. There were so many important characters that needed to be integrated into the main story that it took some doing to involve them all on a level where you cared if they lived or died.
Costner did a good job with the character given that after his life falls apart he becomes an unlikeable guy.
All in all I thought it was a good weekend movie to watch when you really had nothing else to do which is why I viewed this movie.
Now I have to go rent Tombstone and see that for comparison.

Kevin Costner once again projects his own self-image of the all-American hero, this time portraying legendary frontier marshal Wyatt Earp. And as usual, it's too self-important and FAR too bloody long. The first hour is especially tiresome, as the young Wyatt's life is a dreary combination of sentimentality and melodrama but things do pick up once his father bails him out of jail. Even then however, the underused supporting cast seem far more interesting than the stone faced and characterless Costner; even the plum role of Doc Holliday (played by Dennis Quaid who is clearly enjoying himself) feels little more weighty than a cameo. The aspect of male bonding does work well though, making it all the more obvious that the relationships between the Earps and their other halves rarely exceeds the level of soap opera; Costner's relationship with his second wife is marked by some particularly cornball dialogue. The main drawback for this project is the fact that this story has been told so often that it would take something truly spectacular to make it worth it, and not only is this not the best version, it's not even in the top 3; it lacks the elegance of My Darling Clementine, the grittiness of Tombstone and the good natured humour of Gunfight At The OK Corral, making it a decent but unremarkable addition to the genre.

I historical point of view from young man to the leaguin Marshal of our US time. Kevin Costner plays the role of the struggling cowboy to find his entire family a place to call home, and bit by bit he begins to fall into his calling of a US Marshal. Full of a wonderful cast. such as Dennis Quaid who portrays the famous Doc Holiday.

Having recently read Casey Tefertiller's excellent, exhaustive biography of Wyatt Earp, I thought I'd revist a couple of the flicks I'd seen previously to see how well they stacked up to the actual history. As a Western epic, this one is excellent. As an accurate biopic, much of this is a load of hooey. What was fascinating about Earp was that up until the legendary gunfight (which didn't actually occur at the O.K. Corral), Earp had never shot a man. Had in fact settled all disputes with his fists or the butt of his gun. Which would have made the events of the O.K. Corral and after that much more powerful, as Earp went from being deputy marshal to being a deadly vigilante. Having said all that, while a lot leading up to the gunfight is not particularly accurate, the scene of the shootout itself is actually almost exactly as it was purported to have happened. Everything after is more or less similar to the actual events, though truncated and twisted out of order in some cases. What the movie completely nails, though, is the characterization. Kevin Costner is the quintissential Wyatt Earp, both in look and demeanor. While I've always considered Costner to be a decent performer, he's not a particularly great actor, with a pretty flat affect in most of his roles. Here that suits him well, as Earp himself was a pretty unflappable guy. And while I loved Val Kilmer's portrayal of Doc Holliday in "Tombstone", Dennis Quaid's performance is likely much closer to the real former dentist and tubercular gambler, much more volatile and puckish compared to Kilmer's cool, calculated performance. All in all, a great, entertaining Western. Just take the history lesson with a grain of salt.

I've always thought Kevin Costner to be an overrated actor who has the depth of a slab of cardboard.

Skip this one and see Tombstone instead.

Better overall film then 'Tombstone' in the cinematic sense. More about Wyatt Earp the person, really shows you how he came to be what he was. Kevin Costner does a great job and Dennis Quaid is phenomenal as Doc Holiday.

Hey, it's better that Tombstone. I just like the way the story is in this one better and I love the cast. This one had a better ending, and I originally didn't want to see this one...I hyped myself up too much for Tombstone so I guess that's one of the reasons I didn't like it.

In defense of this movie (and it's the ONLY defense), it's most accurate historically. Tombstone was by far more entertaining, but it left a lot of gaps in what actually happened. But the length of this movie combined with Costner's overwhelming need to detail every last thing makes it a very boring time-waster.

*Boring, bad acting. Doesn't deserve to even be mentioned in the same sentence as Tombstone. Tombstone's cast just destroys this movie. Same with the story line. The cast in Tombstone fit their roles better and play the parts better as well. This movie was a bore.

It's rather long, as Costner films tend to be but Kevin is on screen most of the time so it's alright. The film is entertaining enough but not anything extraordinary.

Kevin Costner saps the strength out of every film he is in, I would recommend watching Tombstone instead, but, erm, then we are talking Val Kilmer, so, er, just go back to Clint Eastwood really

Watched on TV today, good but a little drawn out. It also had a random ending. Dennis Quaid was awesome as Doc Holiday and they did a great job aging Kevin Costner's character--I thought it was worth the watch.

I despise this movie. Kevin Costner and Dennis Quaid is a terrible idea. If you can call it that. A mistake is a better title.

This is a classic western film depicting the life of Wyatt Earp. I think it did a pretty good job of capturing his life. Dennis Quaid was outstanding as Doc Holiday.

This was a hideous film. Slow, way too long. I could not wait for it to be over. You really have to like Costner to get through this one.
