X-Men: The Last Stand

Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Famke Janssen

A "cure" for mutancy threatens to alter the course of history. For the first time, mutants have a choice: retain their uniqueness, although it isolates and alienates them, or give up their powers and ...( read more  read more... )become human. The opposing viewpoints of mutant leaders Charles Xavier, who preaches tolerance, and Magneto, who believes in the survival of the fittest, are put to the ultimate test -- triggering the war to end all wars.

Some other actors in the film - Ellen Page (Kitty Pryde), Daniel Cudmore (Piotr "Peter" Rasputin / Colossus), Eric Dane (Jamie Madrox / Multiple Man), Michael Murphy (Warren Worthington II), Dania Ramirez (Callisto), Omahyra Mota (Arclight), Ken Leung (Kid Omega), Mei Melançon (Psylocke),Shohreh Aghdashloo (Dr. Kavita Rao)

Alan Cumming was reportedly uncomfortable with the long hours he had to take with the Nightcrawler makeup, but still planned to return for X-Men: The Last Stand. The part for Nightcrawler was so minimal, however, that the studio felt it was not worthwhile to go through the long and costly makeup process, and the character was cut. Nightcrawler's absence was explained in the tie-in game.

Some mutants may be wiped out in the awesome climax, but, don't let the mutant death count stop from watching this worthy finale to a spectacular trilogy.

The attempt was made to make the characters really shine in this one, but some were misplaced, their powers and their deaths played into a hype...Kelsey Grammer as Beast was a great addition, but they shouldn't have cut Alan Cumming's out as Nightcrawler, as minimal as his part a...( read more)lready was it could have been expanded, it didn't have to be left on the editing room floor...

After Singer left the franchise in the lurch it was all downhill (Superman was shit by the way). Brett Ratner didn't do too badly but the biggest crime was to kill off some of the much loved characters. X4 looks unlikely, which is a shame because after X2 I was getting quite exci...( read more)ted about the whole thing. never mind, I'll get over it!

Too many characters here and it does'nt look good atall. These type of super heroes dont work because its too much in the realms of fantasy, never happen. Batman is the best because its possible in a way, but these should remain in comics. Its all very cheesey, lots of ham and cg...( read more)i, although I did like the beast (nice makeup there)
Ultimately the plot is too far and its just very silly with some characters looking crap and not getting the right amount of screen time to shine. Nice ideas but it doesnt work.

Logan: Well, for all we know, the government helped cook this up.
Dr. Hank McCoy: I can assure you, the government had nothing to do with this.
    Logan: I've heard that before.
Dr. Hank McCoy: My boy, I have been fighting for mutant rights since before you had claws.

A decent follow up to X2, but of course, this is far from the last stand and the worst of these first three films. It might as well have been called Wolverine featuring the X-Men, because he is once again made into too much of the star of the show, despite how much more epic the situations surrounding him are.

Wolverine: I'm the only one who can stop her!

This time around, a cure has been developed, which can reverse the effects of the mutant gene. This caused commotion among good mutants, bad mutants, and the government.

At the same time, the return of Jean Grey and her transformation into the Pheonix brings a whole new level of danger to all involved. Both of these aspects of the story eventually lead to an all out battle to the finish between opposing views.

Prof. Charles Xavier: Don't let it control you.

I'm not sure why they decided to add even more characters, yet have a shorter running time than the first two movies. If the movie is called the Last Stand, it should be way more epic than 1 hour and 40 some minutes can provide.

Magneto: Charles always wanted to build bridges...

Still, there are a lot of great action pieces and effects that make this movie entertaining, in particular a fight that takes place at Jean Grey's house, for me this was the highlight of the film, featuring a combination of wonderful effects, great music, and a particularly impactful moment. If director Bret Ratner could have injected the rest of the film with the style and tone of this scene, there could have been a much better movie as a result.

Despite how both plots could have been made to be something much more special, the direction that the previous films were put in by Bryan Singer has been thrown out in favor of having a giant brawl at the end of the movie to show off how cool things can seem.

I don't necessarily blame the problems of this film on Ratner however, unlike most who do, I think its largely due to the screenwriters (as well as input from Marvel producer Avi Arad who has a habit of forcing "cool things" like Venom into movies that don't really need it) who must be responsible for thinking they could fit so much into one film.

After what had been set up by the first two films, I can't help but feel let down from what had happened here for the supposed conclusion.

However, once again I found this to be a fun movie to watch. It is the most comic booky of the three, and even if some characters are not given a proper ending, the movie still works for the most part. And despite my dislike for the overuse of Wolverine, Jackman is still damn solid as the character, as are McKellan and Stewart. Kelsey Grammer as Beast is a welcome addition as well.

Hopefully more tightly focused spinoff films will work to provide solid X-Men adventure films.

Wolverine: [while he and Beast are fighting off Magneto's forces] I thought you were a diplomat.
Beast: Churchill said that there comes a time when every man must...
[pauses to fight off another baddie, then another, then another]
Beast: Oh, you get the point!
