With the pressure on mutants to give up their powers and pledge alliance with the human race reaching a critical turning point, Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) urges tolerance and understanding as his nemesis Magneto (Ian McKellen) gathers a powerful resistance in preparation for the ultimate war against humankind. Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Anna Paquin, and James Marsden return to reprise the roles they played in the previous two X-Men films, with Kelsey Grammer and Vinnie Jones joining the cast as Beast and Juggernaut respectively. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

David Ansen, Newsweek
Sillier than the Singer versions, Ratner's movie is also -- for this less-than-reverent X-Men fan -- more satisfying.
-
Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal
X-Men: The Last Stand has shifted the shape of the franchise from pretty good, if uninspired, to terrifically entertaining.
-
Andrew Sarris, New York Observer
[I] found myself strangely moved by the sense of relationships, friendly and unfriendly, coming to an end in a dull return to normality in the world of humans and mutants.
-
David Denby, New Yorker
What a comedown, after the weirdly beautiful things Singer and his technicians did in the first two movies.
-
Stephanie Zacharek, Salon.com
The Last Stand is a hugely ambitious picture, and it would have been far more successful if Ratner had scaled it down to focus more on the interaction between the characters.
-
Ann Hornaday, Washington Post
[Director] Ratner makes a hash of the story and characters his predecessor brought to such complex, sympathetic life, delivering a pumped-up exercise in mayhem, carnage and blunt-force trauma.
-
Joshua Starnes, ComingSoon.net
It's kinda lame. There's slightly more to it than that, but basically, that's what X-Men: The Last Stand boils down to.
-

X-ecrable.

Dave White, Movies.com
It's the first halfway decent summer movie so far.
-
Fernando F. Croce, CinePassion
Nothing really feels at stake other than box-office opening-weekend numbers
-
Felix Vasquez Jr., Cinema Crazed
Though it's not the best installment of the series, with many, many present flaws, it sure is a very entertaining film...
-
Gary Susman, Boston Phoenix
Yes, Ratner's music-video attention span and inability to linger on a shot ... blunts the impact of some of [the] big emotional moments. Nonetheless, he liked Singer's films as much as you did, and he hasn't tried to fix what ain't broke.
-
Steve Biodrowski, Cinefantastique
X-Men: The Last Stand is far from perfect, but it does manage to move in the direction of a crowd-pleasing thrill ride without completely lobotomizing itself.
-
Jim Lane, Sacramento News & Review
As usual, character development is dashed off in quick sketches while mutant powers are shown in all the lavish detail that $200 million worth of computers can generate; the thrill may dissipate over time, but it's great fun while it lasts.
-
Cynthia Fuchs, Common Sense Media
X-Men battle for their lives yet again. Tweens OK.
-
Rob Humanick, Projection Booth
The film exists solely to give the Comic Book Guys of the world a chance to see all their favorite action figures, life size and in full form.
-
Brandon Fibbs, BrandonFibbs.com
There's a lot going on in this film %u2013- too much, really...
-
Rob Gonsalves, eFilmCritic.com
It has no passion, no connection to where we are now, and in a series whose stories have heretofore spoken dark truths about American intolerance, that matters.
-
Joe Lozito, Big Picture Big Sound
The results are less than x-citing.
-
Anton Bitel, musicOMH.com
It may be just another superhero movie (or several of them, all frantically playing out at the same time), but it delivers everything you could want from the genre several times over.

Brett Ratner's climax to the X-Men trilogy is an insult to it's intellectual and passionate predecessors that are among the best comic book hero films of all time. Anyone who is a genuine fan of the X-Men movies should understand there are so many things wrong with this dumb, dull and heartless explosion fest. Firstly "the plot" so to speak, is incomprehensible and deeply flawed and apart from picking up on our heroes mission to protect a mutant cure nothing in it makes sense. Secondly, the political subtext and the debates and interpretations of discrimination discussed in the first two art house masterpieces are appaulingly replaced with loads of unnecessary violence and annoyingly loud explosions galore. There's also a lot of painfully cheesy dialogue and minus the developed characters Bryan Singer brought to the original and X2. If you watch this lackluster you aren't being a true X-Men fan, your giving hack directors like Brett Ratner money for ruining something you truly love and care about. It's intolerable, it's boring, it's got no character interaction and nothing ever actually adds up to anything. However, the most rotten and unforgivable thing about this film is how anticlimatic and depressingly heartless it acts when it comes to the demutantisation of Mystique and the tragic death of Scott and Charles Xavier. The producers and screenwriters obviously had no care for the fans whatsoever because it seems to me like they knew nothing about X-Men making it and what it actually means to some people. -

From the start of the flashback in the very beginning of this film, it's quite easy to tell that it could have worked as a completely stand-alone film. And looking at X-MEN: THE LAST STAND as a singular film of its own, it was amazing and well-near perfect. On the other hand, looking at it as the series' second sequel, as it was intended, this one really doesn't come to being as good as the first X-MEN or X2: X-MEN UNITED. It's good that after this no more sequels were made (ORIGINS: WOLVERINE and FIRST CLASS are both prequels, as are all upcoming installments), because with two very (very!) major character deaths, it really wouldn't make sense to create any chronologically further story. That said, this is still worth watching, and I hope I didn't spoil too much. -

The final (?) chapter of the X-Men movies blends perfectly into the mood of its two predecessors, even though it had a different director. Seeing the crew again almost feels like meeting old friends, the characters of the X-men, both old and new additions, are humans just as much as super heroes and their interaction take this beyond the level of a pure action flick, causing emotions and feelings in the viewer. The great cast helps that impression, of course. The special effects are fantastic, the pace fast, yet not rushed and the showdown is very exciting and spectacular. A lot of fans didn't like some character's ultimate demise here, but at least the movie dared to go there and didn't play it safe as third part. Not flawless but very enjoyable, only slightly behind the greatness of part 2. Still the best superhero movie series, though. -

The action and visuals may be good enough, but this entry in the X-men franchise lacks the heart of the previous two. The story lacks the epic feel of X2 and tends to be too busy with itself. The film is inherits the flaw in the first film, which was the plot being too Wolverine-centered. Characters like Storm, Jean Grey, or Xavier come across as one dimensional this time around. The introduction of characters like Angel(who does nothing) and Juggernaut just feel like shallow fan service. There are also many plot threads in this film that just feel like pointless filler. When Jean Grey turns into the Phoenix, it is supposed to be scary but it ends up being funny because Jean looks like she had a bad make-up job. The action and visuals are brilliant as always but the story is poorly conceived. All X-men 3 amounts to are cheap thrills and a disappointing conclusion to the X-men trilogy. -

What a tremendous failure. This movie was a flash flop. The acting was disappointing, the story sucked, and the effects were too flashy. They killed off almost all the cool characters of the X-Men universe or took away there powers and I felt really cheated becuase I love the first two X-Men a lot. Its just all the actors whining or being assholes to eachother, nothing more. I hated this entry in the X-Men films and will never like it, and I am very ashamed of the X-Men fans who did, becaus eit truly ruined the whole series. -

Thankfully the series will backtrack now. Hopefully the series can save it self at its origins. -

X Men: The Last Stand is definitely the most controversial film in the franchise, and with good reason. No doubt it's the weakest film of the trilogy. The list of complaints is long, from major characters being killed off too quickly and too early, an overabundance of characters with inadequate screen time, it's inaccuracy to the comics' timeline, and the many mutants with ridiculously lame powers, etc. And yet, the film is not a failure. It's a well paced, well visioned, and quite epic conclusion that follows the trilogy's two main plotlines: the first being the battle between Magneto and Xavier, and the second being the political debate for mutant equality. Finally, the government has developed a "cure" for the mutant gene, and that sets off Magneto in a furious rage. What better way to start a grand battle between mutants, humans, and the X-Men. Brett Ratner steps into the director's chair as a hired gun, and maintains the tone and mood of the previous two films. He manages to maintain a brisk pace and juggles the many handfuls of subplots as good as anyone could with a story this convoluted. Of course the film feels rushed at times, and with a cast this large, one can only see the mistreatment of certain characters a result of scheduling conflicts and actor availability. But all in all, X3 works. It may not be the perfect conclusion to the trilogy Bryan Singer may have visioned, but it's a competent one. At least the studio didn't fuck this one up too much. -

The third film in the franchise is hard to compare, but as an overall film, it's suspense and non-stop thrilling action keeps it barely up to par with the original film, but I don't think they can make an X-Men movie as good as the second installment. This movie has great thrills, however fails to create any real emotion, which, in the long run, kept me from enjoying this film as much as I wanted to. I believe that this is a very good film all around, but they could have added a bit of backstory or more to the ongoing plots throughout the film, which also seems a bit rushed. This film seems like it only wanted to reach the 105 minute mark, but has much more material that they had to rush through in order to keep the audience intrigued. This turned many fans away from the franchise, but I was not turned off from this trill ride for one second. It still delivers the X-Men story that I love, the characters are back, and the events are even more brutal. X-Men: The Last Stand, should not be the last film, there is much more adventure to behold! -

It's a trading game. Would you like a more sensible plot, more emotional depth and character development? Or would you like more characters, special effects, and adrenaline pumping action? Ratner went with the latter. This movie wasn't actually as bad as many make it out to be. The idea is sound but the execution was a disaster with the whole two sides clashing in the final battle, my god that was lame and idiotic. You'd expect someone like Magneto to come up with a better idea. Also, the Dark Phoenix subplot was interesting but did very little for the main storyline which is silly since the finale suddenly switches over to it. One more thing, why give Wolverine the leading role of the team? Clearly Ratner should have taken this opportunity to develop Storm in that respect. In fact, he should developed the hell out of the newbies. (Colossus, Shadowkat, Iceman) -

Third entry in The X men franchise after the awesome part 2, I thought that this one would be better. I was wrong.A film that was helmed by Bret Rattner is a definite piece of shit aside from Red Dragon and the first season of Prison Break. This is what you have here. A crap third entry in this awesome series. Ratner totally butchered this film, it should have been made by Brian Singer instead. The film I thought was so inept in its conception so ridiculous in its story that afterwards I was just disappointed. I couldn't believe that after the solid X2 they made a piece of crap like this. I honestly expected something great. One reason for this was because everyone was saying that this was better than the second. That The Last Stand was a far superior film. The film relies more on its effects than the story. thats something the second one played on so well, the terrific plotline was just so well executed and the concept behind the film was brilliant like General Stryker trying to rid the mutants was terrific idea.. it made X2 one of the best superhero sequels along with The Dark Knight. But The Last Stand is an unimpressive and bad third entry. This film sucked. fans of the first two films will be disappointed especially if you've heard that this entry was far better than the second. Luckily for fans, Matthew Vaughn director of Kick-Ass has helmed X Men: First Class and it will most definitely redeem the franchise back to glory. -

Something's not right when the 3rd film goes down two notches from the previous ones in terms of plot. There were some very good things here, like the introductions of Beast, Angel and Kitty (Shadowcat) as well as other minor characters, the Phoenix and the mutant "cure" plot lines, the special effects and the action. But it's all muddled. This probably could've been two good well-developed movies or perhaps an even greater X-Men movie had Singer directed it. It kinda lost focus. I only hope for a 4th wheel that can salvage this. -

I also appreciated the addition of Vinnie Jones as Juggernaut and some of the other original X-men team members. Honestly, this kind've just suffers for going by too quickly. Everyone was expecting an epic conclusion to a trilogy, but I feel that Brett Ratner had planned to do something more in a fourth movie. -

When a research facility produces a "cure" for mutants, they find that they must choose sides in a war of ideologies between Magneto and the X-Men. I f**king hated this film when it came out. I have been a fan of the X-Men for more years than I care to admit to, and the Dark Phoenix saga is possibly THE classic X-Men story and to see this bastardised version of it caused a short circuit in my cerebral cortex. I still have a lot of problems with it; there are some serious lapses in logic, the plot has holes you could fly the Golden Gate bridge through and Vinnie Jones is still abysmal as Juggernaut. By far the biggest problem with it though is the dismissive way it treats its protagonists; it introduces large numbers of dispensible, second rate characters to use as cannon fodder (often completely ignoring their genuine personas from the comics) and even the central characters were not safe; six (count 'em, SIX) of the best characters are disposed of for no good reason which causes any real feeling of emotion or drama to just evaporate. The dark side of Wolverine that makes him so interesting is all but stripped away leaving a beclawed army recruitment poster in his place and worst of all, Phoenix is changed from malevolent, all-powerful galactic entity into "bad Willow" who spends most of the film just standing around doing nothing. Looked at objectively, there's plenty of action and interesting visuals to distract a popcorn-guzzling audience, mostly provided once more by Ian McKellen's Magneto, and it does entertain. It's just pales in comparison to both the brilliant second instalment and Nolan's Batman films. -
