    A lot of fun but appropriately dark and cerebral, this film works because it has a great cast and a director who finds an almost perfect tone to make the most of the source material. Still, the sequel shows what this film needed to be great.

    The first is always gonna have a hard time and this is not a good start. The whole thing is so silly and cheesey its a wonder they made two more, the actors are good and make it work to a degree but the plot is so basic, the second comes alive much better.

    Wolverine: What's a Magneto?
    Prof. Charles Francis Xavier: A very powerful mutant. He believes that a war is brewing between mutants and the rest of humanity. I've been following his activities for some time. The man who attacked you is an associate of his called Sabertooth.
    Wolverine: Sabertooth?

    The first movie in this series does a good job showing the potential of the movies that could follow. A live action adaptation of X-Men could have proven to be tricky, but with some changes to the source material, this film works well enough to get the ball rolling.

    Wolverine: Hey, bub, I'm not finished with you yet.

    The story serves as an origin story, bringing together a list of characters. The variety of mutants include Wolvering and Rogue, who serve as our eyes into this film as they make their way into Prof. Charles Xavier's School for the Gifted, joining Jean Grey, Storm, and Cyclops.

    Meanwhile, a rival group of mutants, headed by Magneto, played by Ian McKellan, are also around and up to no good.

    There are a handful of good characters and a couple lame ones...Cyclops. It's paced well enough, with some nice action and humor. It takes a somewhat realistic approach to it's comic book origins as well, as far as people with special abilities goes.

    While plot fits the standard mold of a comic book movie, the casting is particularly well handled and adds to the success of this film. Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen are the best handled as Xavier and Magneto, and Hugh Jackman is pretty awesome as Wolverine, despite my objections of treating him as the star of the show.

    My main problem with this film always comes from its simplistic approach. I can credit this to a smallish budget and the fact that this is an intro film for a franchise, but the lack of development for the other mutants is just irritating in a film called X-men.

    Cyclops: Well, what would you prefer? Yellow spandex?

    Brian Singer was an interesting choice as director of this high profile franchise, but he handles things well enough, giving the film a good summer quality, while adding some other themes with to it, such as paralleling the supposed "threat" of mutants to McCarthyism.

    Overall, the combination of some fun action/effects with some well handled casting make for a good start.

    Wolverine: There's someone here.
    Cyclops: Where?
    Wolverine: I don't know. Keep your eye open.

When he kidnaps Rogue (Anna Paquin) from the X-Men's compound, Xavier and his forces must rescue her, even as they continue to vie with Magneto for the fearsomely strong mutant battler Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). Both Xavier and Magneto also have to contend with Senator Kelly (Bruce Davison), a heartless political leader who wants a final solution against mutants on both sides.

    Review
    I thought this movie was a lot better than I thought it would be. Although, I am not a fan of the comic, so I had no idea what to expect. Hugh Jackman did a great job acting as a vicious animal and then a fatherly, caring man. His one-liners were also hilarious.

    The ideas used in this movie were very original and the special effects were great. The conflict between 2 characters over a love interest was very humorous. I thought the characters were developed well and the costumes and sets were great. This movie is a great one to see with everyone.
