like lang's 'scarlet street' or renoir's 'la chienne' set in the geisha quarter of old edo, this colorful melodrama was adapted by mizoguchi's frequent collaborator yoshitaka yoda from a kabuki play. a wealthy mill owner, beloved by his workers for his kind and generous spirit, is thwarted in his attempts to find a bride by the large birthmark covering half of his face. wanting to show him a good time, some colleagues introduce him to the 'floating world' and even here he faces rejection, until one ex-convict prostitute, intent on proving herself to those who feel she'll never be a proper geisha, takes him on as a client. of course he falls madly in love with her, whereupon the owners of the geisha house see a rich sucker to bleed dry, and his life is soon in ruins. not only a noirish potboiler shot in cinemascope, it functions as a critique of the institution of geisha that turns women into commodities as well
