Youth Without Youth Reviews and Ratings

Coppola's new movie Youth without youth was the story of Dominique Matei, which they divided the story in 2, the first involving an old professor's rejuvenation after being hit by lightning and the second the reincarnation of a girl who also happens to be the double of man's lon...( read more)g lost love.I didn't completely understood the movie. I knew it was about time but there was more, I could not put it all together.Too heavy movie for me. The acting was excellent, Tim Roth was great. The photography beautiful, the locations were fantastic. I did enjoy the movie in some parts but I didn't find it all that engaging. Not a bad movie by any means but it got a little bit weird in certain parts and I don't think everyone is going to love it.

Often too complex and ambiguous, however cinematically stunning.

Sorry - what should have been interesting is dull as dishwater and one of Mr. Coppala's that I really didn't enjoy. Too sedately presented and it's attempt at fragmented philosophy & theoretical hyposthesis falls flat & frivilous in the end.
  • August 23, 2009
The beginning is kinda boring, but the movie is really interesting. Lots of philosophical questions and stuff.

film dupa Eliade... destul de tare!

Not for everyone! Tim Roth is superb!!! two thumbs up for Francis Ford!!

I couldn't believe that Francis Ford Coppola wrote and directed this film. It kind of reminded me of Benjamin Buttons with a little of Phenomenon mixed in. Tim Roth is miscast as the lead role. Matt Damon should have passed on doing a cameo in the film. He did it as a thank you c...( read more)ameo for The Rainmaker, like he did a cameo in Finding Forrester as a thank you for Good Will Hunting. Damon should have waited for a better Coppola film to do a thank you cameo in, than this film. The first hour was interesting but the 2nd hour is way off. On a positive, the cinematography was good.

A rich and bold artistic vision, realized without a sense of cohesion and unity. The film seems like splinters of a hundred great ideas and thoughts, but does not congeal into a great film. Coppola deserves a great deal of praise for consistently bringing a new and exciting visio...( read more)n to the screen with each new film, and is a special contributor to cinematic language that I'm sure will be appreciated more in later years. But unfortunately Youth Without Youth is largely a bewildering, albeit extremely intriguing venture with little effect on the audience.

I just saw this film last night, and it definitely warrants a second viewing. It's a little slow and the story gets a bit convoluted, but the performances are solid. It's visually appealing, and ultimately is a magical film.
  • December 22, 2008
Very interesting but weird as only Coppola can do it. Slow in a few places. Worth the watch.

I watched this movie not knowing what to expect. I finished it not completely knowing what to think. This is a very vivid, passionate film full of philosophical ideas and bold ambition. It's a gorgeously photographed and sharply edited film, carefully tended to by the artistic ha...( read more)nd of Francis Ford Coppola. However, it's an uneven viewing experience. At times awe-striking and completely compelling, the story also strays into the absurd and is extremely frustrating during some segments. I'd say this is essential viewing for any fan of the director, but it should be watched with an open mind.

A mental feast of an acquired taste. It's a shame the negative rap this film got. I really enjoyed its magic.
  • October 12, 2008
Francis Ford Coppola and I clearly have very different ideas about meaning in movies. I have now seen three or four films by him and have been left feeling empty and confused by each one. Let me start off by saying, I am *not* a fan of The Godfather, parts one, two or three. If I...( read more) worked I could admire the craft, but overall I couldn't see what it was saying or why it did why it did. Call me blind to good taste, but apparently it's a reaction that continues to be true for all Coppola movies. I next saw his short film "Life With Zoe" in the collection "New York Stories." Pleasant, but I had no idea what meaning it held. And now Youth Without Youth, whose complicated plot runs through several different possible themes before ending with a shot that made me think, "Wait... Now... wait... WHAT just happened?" I felt it lacked cohesiveness and, judging from the other comments here on Flixster, it's not just me not "getting" Coppola.

Several moments feel like they were deliberately wooden. A character falls to the ground, and it's as if she is a mechanical toy that just goes stiff and topples over. Dialogue sounds like it comes from a David Mamet play. Every time philosophizing is done, the whole film screeches to a halt as "deep points" are made, and then the film continues as if nothing has happened. It didn't bring me to a greater awareness of the movie, however, as it could have done - instead, it made the entire thing feel amateurish, done by a student who wants to make a "great film" in the style of the masters, and just ends up pushing together a lot of moments that could make a movie meaningful, and then releasing it, convinced it's going to go down in history as utter brilliance. Sorry, Francis. It doesn't look like anyone, including me, thinks this is the next Godfather.

THIS FILM IS SO UNDERRATED. IT WAS AMAZINGLY TOUCHING.

A linguistic & philosophical feast for those inclined. Roth plays (both) his part(s) to perfection. A grim picture of humanity beginning just before WWII. Terrible film Just don't bother with this one.

I have to say, there were flashes of Coppola's brilliance in this movie. I thought the premise was interesting and Tim Roth was great and highly underrated but this really was a mess. Now most people who have seen this film were dissapointed with it,but I gotta disagree with them. Sure. I expected another masterpiece from Coppola, but what I got, even though it wasnt what I expected,was...well,it left me baffled and confused, and not knowing what had really happe...( read more)ned. The ending doesnt make much sense, but there's something in it,something that makes the 2 hours of the film worthwhile. The storyline is very confusing,so you have to pay very close attention to it,and even so,when you get to the climax, you can't help but to wonder "what the hell was that??" But I guess that's what made this film such a good experience for me,I got really into the movie, and few movies can accomplish that. It made me think about it,and I was debating whether to hate this or love this.at the end,I decided the latter. If you like movies that a 5 year old can understand, then stay away from this,it will be a waste of your time, but if you want to see something weird but at the same time, very interesting,I recommend you see this movie.

the plot is deeper than the sinopsis given here.

Youth Without Youth is a weird slightly incoherent melding of Faust and Dorian Gray. I think to fully get this film I would have had to watch it a second time but it seemed to take soooo long to watch the first time through that I didn't have the patients to watch it a second time.

It didn't really grab me. The story was a bit convoluted, yet it didn't make me care enough to ponder it later. At the same time, who am I to judge Francis Ford Coppola?

Misunderstood since many didn't have a chance to see it in the theater. Check it out now.

How did this guy make Dracula? Here's another movie where the director tried to be too cryptic, symbolic and other such words and ended up with an incoherrent piece of crap.

I have a really hard time with this film. I love where they were going with it though. The search for knowledge, the Nazis, the strange powers, all of that is great. So is Tim Roth. not an easy film to watch, but very rewarding if you give it the attention it deserves. tim roth is at his best. the first half of this film is fascinating and it sort of loses steam near the end, but still manages to be pretty powerful.

    Excellent movie.

    Very dream like.

The opening credits were done like an old classic, which the movie also plays like. Very good movie.

Music is very good and followed the areas where the main character visits throughout the movie.

Malgré les critiques quasi-impitoyables à son sujet, le tout dernier film de Coppola me semble réellement digne d'intérêt par la touche de mysticisme qu'il parvient à apporter dans cette histoire a priori inintéressante. Though not a film for every one's taste, this is not a mainstream film, it is still a refreshing look at what movie making used to be. A complex and challenging film, from one of the great American directors, and part of the continuing magical adventures of Tim Roth(The Legend Of 1900), this time around Roth is a linguistics professor trying to develop a theory of the origins of hum...(read more)an language and ...( read more)conciousnes at his 70th birthday when he is struck by lightening that reverts him to his youth. Not only is he younger, but he discovers he can read whole books in minutes, see into dreams, and in the films most outlandish moments some limited teleknesis(but in all fairness it's his only way to stop an evil Nazi scientist who wants to jump start human evolution through electro shock). From there our hero meets a women who resembles one he used to know, who is similarly struck by lightening or near lightening which causes her to regress into previous lives. Naturally the two fall in love, and the odd couple are happy enough until her ancient language fits, get more frequent, and dive further and further into primitive languages, much to Roth's joy, though his love ages more and more with each regression.

Like I said Youth Without Youth is an ambitious mix of science fiction, world war 2 spy espionage, romance, meditation on death, aging, linguistics, the origins of conciousness, time, philosophy, the atomic bomb, multiple personalities, and reincarnation.

Watching Youth Without Youth is a bit like reading an overwrought but well written novel, where you can appreciate the skill of the speaker's use of language more than any profound statement bieng made.
Not that Coppola's subjects are not profound, or treated, so, just that's it's done in such a way that at first view it's going to go over just about everyone's head. Author Mircea Eliade, is better known as a religious historian and academic, whose work is as rigerous as his fiction offerings. This is a well made and well performed film, but it's zeal gets ahead of itself on more than one ocassion.

There's a lot to admire about Youth Without Youth, but potential for entertainment is not exactly one of them. I love that this is mature, historical fiction (as borrowed from Romanian writer Mircea Eliade) rendered beautifully by a master filmmaker, but damn if this isn't dull a...( read more)t times. Frankly, the movie's lack of focus is a huge disappointment. I had to watch it in three chunks, each forty minutes long, before I couldn't stand to sit through it anymore.

This got critically drubbed and made very little money (fortunately it was a low-budget effort), and I feel bad for Coppola because of that. It is a fantastic movie to look at, has actors of presence in Tim Roth and Alexandra Maria Lara, and offers up numerous good ideas by virtue of its source. Unfortunately, those stars are lost in the script they have to wade through, and that beautiful imagery just seems to swirl together without anything distinctive going on in it.

This definitely could have been better.
  • June 21, 2008
    Very pretty, but utterly pointless.

Stay away from it. It just....the ending was so disappointing. It's one of those movies that you expect to have to gain small bits of knowledge from so you can piece everything together in the end......Nope.

    Waste of 3 hours.
