Zathura

Dax Shepard, Derek Mears, Douglas Tait, Frank Oz, Jeff Wolfe

Two brothers discover an oblong box in the park, which they dismiss as "just some dumb old game." The boys turn their attention away from the game's "jungle adventure" board to discover a second game ...( read more  read more... )board inside with an outer-space theme and a colored path leading to the purple planet, Zathura. Mayhem ensues each time one of the boys draws a game card or rolls the dice. Facing meteors and giant robots, the brothers begin to appreciate each other and their sibling rivalry dissolves.

Funny as all get out and fun adventure. Not as good as Jumanji, but holds its own.

"A New Adventure From the World of Jumanji"

Two young brothers are drawn into an intergalactic adventure when their house is magically hurtled through space because of the board game they are playing.

What makes Zathura so great, beyond the incredibl...( read more)e visual designs, tense challenges, and a great director, is the fact that it was adapted from a Chris Van Allburg book. The Polar Express was a visionary adventure, and Jumanji, family fun. Zathura doesn't get to be as thrilling and masterful as the animated film by Robert Zemeckis, but innovates ingredients from Jumanji, while at the same time creating new ones. It is a movie of great adventure, infinite inventiveness, and a screenplay that will please anyone in the whole family. Jon Favreau has an unlimited supply of audacity and he applies every bit of that to Zathura. Then there's the cast, which features impressive acting from young actors Josh Hutcherson and Jonah Bobo.

The game is on. The danger is real. And the adventure is just the beginning. Zathura isn't just some "dumb old game", as what brothers Walter and Danny dismissed when they found it hidden under the basement of their old house. It's a mysterious game with an outer space the...( read more)me in which they face perils like meteors, aliens, a robot gone amok, and an intergalactic battle whenever a card is drawn or the dice is rolled. With the help of a stranded astronaut the brothers must finish the game on time or otherwise get trapped in outer space forever.

    2.) Jonah Bobo (Danny)
    3.) Dax Shepard (Astronaut)
    4.) Kristen Stewart (Lisa)
    5.) Tim Robbins (Dad)

It was with joy and amusement with its out-of-this-world theme that made me enjoy Zathura as a great film that is exciting and enjoyable for the whole family, while also finding it as one of some sci-fi film titles that I know are for kids. As with Jumanji, it's another children's book written by the same author, Chris Van Allsburg; the story and special effects (SFX) are fine even though it started at home and blasted off into space as if it were a dream. I find that and its '50s/'60s retro game look so weird to me. The good appreciating cooperation kept Walter and Danny from sibling rivalry at this time of danger, and the astronaut was a good help to them. And so did their older sister - I see that KStew did a fine performance even if she delivered some dialogue and being nonactive in the developing plot throughout.

Extremely well made and terrific acting.
They've mixed comedy, mystery and excellence all in the same movie which I think is terrific!
