  • Law Abiding Citizen (R, 2009)

Excellent film, really fast paced and pretty tense in places. The plot is kinda mixed really, it sta...[ read more ]rts out as a vengeance based film but slowly merges into a quite sick murder film with plenty of nice sequences of hits/kills, the odd one being abit of a seat jumper haha ;)
It is silly at the same time though, Butler loses his wife and child to a couple of killers who rob them so he inturn ends up killing the robbers, their lawyer and many innocents to make up for it or cos they were involved somehow. You slowly go from wanting Butler to kick ass to maybe thinking whoa there Gerard! now your a baddie!!
    but it is good fun.

The action sequences are very good and as said do surprise you at the last moment in places, the acting is all reasonable accept for the female mayor and Butlers accent hehe and the plot does turn as it moves forward, nice ideas but with some daft plot conclusions near the end spoil it slightly.

The one thing that sticks in my mind is why he Butlers character goes so crazy and kills so many, its abit too far really, sure he kills off the robbers and maybe their useless lawyer and the useless judge but all the rest? your always thinking during the film...this guys wife and daughter wouldn't want him killing all these people in their name surely haha

    Enjoyed it though.

  • The Fourth Kind (PG-13, 2009)

If the "real footage" we watched was real than it was a decent film. If the "real footage" we watche...[ read more ]d was fake then it was brilliant. Now I'm almost sure the "real footage" was fake but see the fact that I write almost instead of completely is why it's brilliant. Is this a really well done film, no by no means. But it did what Blair Witch and Paranormal did not do which was have "real footage" and it's dramatization beside it so it could truly fool a lot of people into thinking that any of this actually happened. Which I doubt it did and hell, considering what I saw, HOPE that it didn't. Despite Paranormal still being FAR superior to this film, this one really has some creepy scary moments that will stay with as you. As you keep debating whether any of this is real. See, I still can't make my mind up. Dammit.
  • Where the Wild Things Are (PG, 2009)

If you cross Labyrinth's escapism and large creatures with maybe a hint of The Dark Crystal and some...[ read more ] Muppet lunacy here and there you may have an idea of what to expect in this film. The huge 'wild things' are actually designed and made by the fantastic Henson company and you can see it through and through :) lovely to look at and charming in every way. Each one looks exactly as they should and move pretty well too, even though they are all pretty much like Sweetums or Big Bird from the Muppets they all work so well and look realistic, this could of been a huge cgi mess so I'm really happy they went with this option, Henson's boys are fudging gods in their field, excellent.

After numerous false starts and problems with bad previews etc..I can see why its a mixed bag but still worthy of recognition. The look is lovely and original much like the classic children's book, sure its kinda drab, rough and maybe plain looking but that's just the outback wilderness feel of the book which is kept perfectly. Much of the beloved book is right there on the screen making a great adaptation with some (not too many) nice ideas to beef up the plot (the book had virtually no text) and a very artistic approach with filming making this almost as lovely as the drawings by Maurice Sendak, a nice knarley fairytale of sorts. I think the extra time Jonze spent with his view on this was time well spent as its a beautiful film in simplicity, colour and view points.

One problem of course comes with the minimalistic story, as there was only about ten sentences in the book new or extented story was needed to flesh out the film, its very 'primeval' and simple which unfortunately does become alittle dull and boring midway through. The film feels stretched for ideas and you can see everything slowly running out of steam due to the very basic plotline, its very very basic, almost non existent hehe
That's the other problem, I feel kids will bore of this very quickly and may even fear some of it as its alittle dark in places and not as light or glorious as the book, they may not even follow the story much either as its alittle off the wall haha basic but weird. Kudos on the voice work here too, everyone really fits their 'wild thing' well and brings a true sense of feeling and soul to their character.

I think folks of about 25 upwards will really like this, many will have been brought up with this children's book and like me have fond memories come flooding back :) I since have checked out the book and it almost brought a lump to my throat as I looked over the images which I recalled instantly.
Its not a stunning film but its a lovely well made film from a classic much loved source, a must see.

  • Michael Jackson's This Is It (PG, 2009)

Well I gotta admit that Jacko's last concert certainly looks as if it would have been pretty special...[ read more ], this doc really shows how much had been created and how far they had come with the event and it did look really good (if you like Jacko that is). I am a Jacko fan yes and have always loved his music and never believed all the court room drama, right or wrong I dunno but I let his music and dance skills speak for themselves as he is probably the greatest musical performer ever.
This film shows how the concert would have covered many of his best songs from the Jackson 5 to Thriller to Earth Song, some of it looking so so but some of it looking excellent with all new film footage created for the song....Smooth Criminal and Thriller looking the best ^__^

Despite his age it shows Jacko really up for the event and still showing all his moves perfectly, he does also come across as weak, tired and slim, this of course all adding to his death but he was still clearly ready to rock as best he could, he still had it.

Yes it does look dated, the whole thing could of been from the 80's easily but Jacko always was an 80's kinda guy, it was his prime, he was only one of few who could actually still make that era work today. You just can't deny that most of his music is classic and will never die despite its dated look and feel, its timeless and this concert would have been a definite story for the grandkids haha

    RIP Jacko
  • Law Abiding Citizen (R, 2009)

what a pleasant surprise. this film is being widely panned by critics, but i couldnt help but be en...[ read more ]thralled with this film from start to finish. the tension and intensity were developed very well through the whole film as i waited patiently for the reveal of how butlers character was pulling off what seemed to be impossible, and while some may not like the big reveal at the end, i thought the film was laid out very well. the film presents some very interesting ethical questions that is only hightened by the fact that there was no true villian and no true hero due to the fact that every character was developed in such a way that they were equally likeable while being equally selfish. butler was great in one of the surprise films of the year.
  • Couples Retreat (PG-13, 2009)

Joey: Are you telling me, that after 7 years of marriage, you can still get aroused by the same woma...[ read more ]n.
    Dave: I do.

Despite having assembled quite the cast for a movie with a good premise, this is an overlong, not terribly funny, product placement filled excuse to have talented people spend time in Bora Bora and let us watch.

There are four couples in this film. One is Dave and Ronnie, played by Vince Vaughn and Malin Akerman, a couple with kids, and simple overworking problems. Another is Joey and Lucy, played by Jon Favreau and Kristin Davis, a couple counting the days for their daughter to go off to college so they can separate. The next is divorced Shane, played by Faizon Love, and his 20 year old new girlfriend Trudy. Finally, there is Jason and Cynthia, played by Jason Bateman and Kristen Bell, a couple about to get a divorce because of the stress from trying to conceive.

Jason and Cynthia have a plan to keep their marriage going, however they need all their friends to help out with the expenses. The plan is a giant group getaway to a paradise location in Bora Bora, known as Eden. Its a special group rate that should allow them to participate in all sorts of fun, however the fun also comes with couple's therapy sessions. Now each couple must try to learn more about how to stay close to each other.

The movie just isn't very funny. This is somewhat surprising, given that it is scripted by Vaughn and Favreau, however it isn't surprising that it is only their scenes together that really work. Certainly not helping is the PG-13 rating, restricting anyone from really cutting deep into comedic territory.

The assemblage of this movie isn't very well handled either. Directed by Vaughn and Favreau's producing pal Peter Billingsly (Ralphie from A Christmas Story), this movie really suffers from pacing issues, bad cutting, excessive moments of repeated jokes and lines of dialog, and some pretty forced product placement - see the five minute Guitar Hero showdown/commercial. Add to that a completely terrible ending from a story standpoint, and the whole thing is pretty much a misfire.

The few redeeming qualities do come from Vaughn doing what Vince Vaughn does well, with quick and smart dialog, Favreau embracing another dick character well, Faizon Love being a generally entertaining guy, and the ladies all looking nice.

Certainly not a movie that needs to be seen anytime soon.

Dave: Thanks for bringing us here to problem island by the way.
  • Law Abiding Citizen (R, 2009)

Not nearly as good as the trailer made it out to be...It's almost played like a horror movie at time...[ read more ]s because there's one jump scene that leaves you thinking that anything is possible. The movie is also quite gruesome, in particular the opening scene that establishes the plot for the rest of the movie.
That said, there are some cool moments during the movie that kept me interested, although the payoff at the end isn't nearly as good as some of the ideas I thought they'd pull.
Also, if you watch this, I can almost guarantee you'll never want to have a flip-phone again...

And sure, something h...[ read more ]appens, but the slow building up to it and the stationary camera direction don't really allow you to get scared. Yeah, congratulations on the low-budget film-making, but there are no-budget horror films far exceeding this one. It does earn several realism points, but ultimately, it's not believable, it's not horrifying, it's persistently continual and it left me with zero empathy. Yet another overly hyped movie of 2009 that is nothing if you remove the hype.
