  • Couples Retreat (PG-13, 2009)

After all the bad reviews, I thought this was going to be a real stinker. Much to my surprise it was...[ read more ] a funny movie.

The writing was alright, and the delivery from the cast made it more funny. Favreau proved with his other movies like Swingers and Made that he is a superb writer who can deliver story and laughs. He handed the directorial reigns over to a first time director, but I'm sure he had some influence, as the movie still turned out pretty good.

Vaughn, Bateman and Favreau are all funny. Very good actors who can deliver their lines well. Throw in the beautiful trio of Davis, Akerman and Bell, and you've got three more good actors who are easy on the eyes. Love throws in his comedic skill, as does the rest of the supporting cast.

It was laugh out loud in quite a few places, and it had a story that was good enough to keep me from going to the bathroom.

Although not a classic, and not a movie that will end up in my collection, it's a movie that I will definitely sit through again when aired on a movie channel.
  • Disney's A Christmas Carol (PG, 2009)

Gorgeous adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic is a 3D feast for the eyes. This slavishly fait...[ read more ]hful interpretation, is highlighted by effects so extraordinary, there are moments where it literally looks as if snow is falling in the theater. As recounted here, the story really takes its time and exhibits a dark moodiness, especially in the early scenes. In other parts, there are nightmarish images that are rather jolting for a PG rated film. Consequently, the film will please adults much more than it will entertain young children. However, for those that are patient, this atmospheric version of the classic tale is an enjoyable holiday treat.

  • The Fourth Kind (PG-13, 2009)

If the "real footage" we watched was real than it was a decent film. If the "real footage" we watche...[ read more ]d was fake then it was brilliant. Now I'm almost sure the "real footage" was fake but see the fact that I write almost instead of completely is why it's brilliant. Is this a really well done film, no by no means. But it did what Blair Witch and Paranormal did not do which was have "real footage" and it's dramatization beside it so it could truly fool a lot of people into thinking that any of this actually happened. Which I doubt it did and hell, considering what I saw, HOPE that it didn't. Despite Paranormal still being FAR superior to this film, this one really has some creepy scary moments that will stay with as you. As you keep debating whether any of this is real. See, I still can't make my mind up. Dammit.
  • Paranormal Activity (R, 2009)

In today's saturated media age; with the advent of YouTube and Facebook and our relative ease of con...[ read more ]nectivity to one another, it's rare for a movie to garner so much word-of-mouth buzz. And positive word-of-mouth at that. It's even more rare that that should happen because of society's increasingly skeptical attitude toward almost everything nowadays.

But, thankfully, Paranormal Activity is a film that lives up to all the hype. Of course, that is an incredibly subjective statement, but this is also a review of the film--one of the most subjective things you can write as it relates to the very subjective art of cinema itself. But let me tell you: I was glued to my seat and perspiring heavily!

Not only does this movie succeed where its predecessors, The Blair Witch Project and White Noise failed. It surpasses any level of comparison between those previous films and elevates itself unto a genre of its own. A truly frightening film.

As we follow the daily lives of a young suburban couple, we come to find out that one of them is haunted by some sort of a "presence." This entity has been following our protagonist for the better part of their life and doesn't seem to want to leave. Everything has remained rather harmless up to this point; only some nightmares and some strange sounds have been manifesting themselves as evidence of paranormal activity. So, they decide to videotape their lives in order to see what they can see.

And what they see (and what the audience sees) is incredibly startling. The mere fact that there isn't a blood-thirsty boogeyman or a nefarious monster hunting after these two lovers is incredibly refreshing. And the fact that so much is left to one's imagination is also an brave and inspired risk the filmmakers took. In today's horror market, it would seem that the gore-for-gore's-sake mentality has taken over. But this little film-that-could provides much needed relief to a genre that has been pelted to death by so many clichés and re-hashed ideas.

Of course, some will not be affected by this film in the least. But if you are the least bit succeptible to feeling creeped out, watch this movie. You will definitely have an eerie sense of abysmal fear when you return home and you'll want to check under your bed and in your closet for anything that's been turned or may be lurking within the darkness. Or maybe you'll go home and sleep like a baby without a shred of trepidation. But I think not. Whether you're too proud to admit it, Paranormal Activity will definitely possess you with some semblance of fear. That's as subjective as it gets, really. But it's also as much of a promise as I can guarantee.
  • Couples Retreat (PG-13, 2009)

Joey: Are you telling me, that after 7 years of marriage, you can still get aroused by the same woma...[ read more ]n.
    Dave: I do.

Despite having assembled quite the cast for a movie with a good premise, this is an overlong, not terribly funny, product placement filled excuse to have talented people spend time in Bora Bora and let us watch.

There are four couples in this film. One is Dave and Ronnie, played by Vince Vaughn and Malin Akerman, a couple with kids, and simple overworking problems. Another is Joey and Lucy, played by Jon Favreau and Kristin Davis, a couple counting the days for their daughter to go off to college so they can separate. The next is divorced Shane, played by Faizon Love, and his 20 year old new girlfriend Trudy. Finally, there is Jason and Cynthia, played by Jason Bateman and Kristen Bell, a couple about to get a divorce because of the stress from trying to conceive.

Jason and Cynthia have a plan to keep their marriage going, however they need all their friends to help out with the expenses. The plan is a giant group getaway to a paradise location in Bora Bora, known as Eden. Its a special group rate that should allow them to participate in all sorts of fun, however the fun also comes with couple's therapy sessions. Now each couple must try to learn more about how to stay close to each other.

The movie just isn't very funny. This is somewhat surprising, given that it is scripted by Vaughn and Favreau, however it isn't surprising that it is only their scenes together that really work. Certainly not helping is the PG-13 rating, restricting anyone from really cutting deep into comedic territory.

The assemblage of this movie isn't very well handled either. Directed by Vaughn and Favreau's producing pal Peter Billingsly (Ralphie from A Christmas Story), this movie really suffers from pacing issues, bad cutting, excessive moments of repeated jokes and lines of dialog, and some pretty forced product placement - see the five minute Guitar Hero showdown/commercial. Add to that a completely terrible ending from a story standpoint, and the whole thing is pretty much a misfire.

The few redeeming qualities do come from Vaughn doing what Vince Vaughn does well, with quick and smart dialog, Favreau embracing another dick character well, Faizon Love being a generally entertaining guy, and the ladies all looking nice.

Certainly not a movie that needs to be seen anytime soon.

Dave: Thanks for bringing us here to problem island by the way.
  • Law Abiding Citizen (R, 2009)

Law Abiding Citizen is one of those films where the trailer leads you to believe it's going to be sm...[ read more ]arter than it really is. I was expecting to see a film along the lines of Inside Man but instead got a fairly linear action suspense film with a few predictable twists.

The plot, although not as smart as it leads on, is still highly engaging. It's a bit of a guilty pleasure because I didn't want it to end. Although when the climax arrived, it was a little abrupt. Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx were very good here. It's always nice to see up and coming Leslie Bibb too.

Overall, the film was entertaining, but it just felt like something was missing. Or maybe it just didn't blow me away like I thought it was going to. It's just mediocre. But it's still a fun ride. Well worth a watch.
  • Law Abiding Citizen (R, 2009)

As a budding film critic its quite difficult to review a movie like "Law Abiding Citizen", on one ha...[ read more ]nd its one of the funniest films of the year which in that case I'd give it a 4 star review but the problem is that I'm fairly sure that it was suppose to be a highly dramatic, intense action drama and a statement on the shambles on the American justice system. In that case you have your 1.5 stars right here. Which is a shame considering the talent that no one ever considered the logic behind any of this.
Take for example at the beginning from Gerard Butler's family is killed, I mean I get it he's angry that his family has been killed and wants justice. Problem is that both the script and Butler's performance is so one-sided that it takes everything to a one giant level of stupidity. The change from family man to blood thirsty mass murderer is so drastic and considering there is not a single moment of doubt or moral conflict that it left me with two questions.
    1. Are we suppose to root for him?
    2. If the mobs dudes didn't take the little girl out, would this guy have done it once, she hits the teen years?
Its this type of lazy writing and zany over the top "Saw-esque" killing scenes that make "Law Abiding Citizen" difficult to understand what its trying to do.
Sadly despite these flaws at least Butler is interesting and looks like he's at least having fun blowing sh*t up. Everyone else, particularly Jamie Foxx and Viola Davis just look as though they are totally going to switch to Philip Seymour Hoffman's agent once shooting is done. Hell I don't think I've ever seen extras look this embarrassed to be in a film.
Though credit should go to F. Gary Gary for making a well shot piece of junk and its a film I'd go see for in no other reason there is a lot to laugh at in "Law Abiding Citizen" Just don't expect anything like logic, a brain or a point.

Progressively freakier stuff happened each night. I dreaded each nighttime bedroom episode. Scarier ...[ read more ]for us, but why did they leave their bedroom door wide open to that dark hallway and staircase? I had trouble going to sleep in the dark for the next few nights after seeing this movie. The characters were somewhat annoying and got what they deserved after messing with a Ouija board and taunting the paranormal; typical stupid movie haunted house owners didn't leave after such scary things happened. I found it hard to believe the demon would follow them if they left the house; it took years to find Katie after her childhood experiences. The daytime scenes were boring; I craved more night action. The ending was as effective as the Blair Witch had. A fun ride, but I won't be buying the DVD.
