The director died at the age of 81. He died in los angles hospital. He had been nominated for five directing Oscars - for M*A*S*H, Nashville, The Player, Short Cuts and Gosford Park - and two producer nominations for Nashville and Gosford Park, but had never won. His last film was A Prairie Home Companion, starring Meryl Streep and Lindsay Lohan, which was released in the US five months ago. The director surprised the audience at the Oscars by revealing he underwent a heart transplant a decade ago."I got the heart of, I think, a young woman who was about her late 30s. And so by that kind of calculation, you may be giving me this award too early. Because I think I've got about 40 years left on it, and I intend to use it." unfortuntley he died on Monday. MAY he rest in peace.

    I'm a terrible person. My first thought when I learned of this was "Finally."

    I've never been a fan of Altman. The man worked for decades, making dozens of films, and yet only made three that I'd really call "good": M*A*S*H, The Long Goodbye, and 3 Women. There are honorable mentions with The Player, Nashville and Secret Honor, which had just as many flaws as minor strengths. And past that were countless pieces of crap, the belligerent and inept ramblings of an octogenarian pothead: Popeye, Gosford Park, Dr. T & the Women, Brewster McCloud, O.C. & Stiggs, so on.

    The amazing thing is that he could make so many bombs and still have a career lasting until his 80s. Many directors come along and make a few equally good (but not great) films, but stumble into a few failures and hardly work again; Altman got away with decades of bad cinema unscathed. And that's where I have to give him respect: his inexplicable endurance is probably the greatest facet of the legacy he leaves behind.
