JUST when he thought he'd put that shocker of a year behind him, the heat is back on Mel Gibson, whose box office hit Apocalypto has been attacked by Guatemala's presidential commissioner on racism.
Ricardo Cajas criticized Gibson's historic blockbuster for painting Mayan people in a derogatory light - saying the film sets back the understanding of the Mayan people by 50 years.
"It shows the Mayans as a barbarous, murderous people that can only be saved by the arrival of the Spanish,'' Cajas said.
Gibson employed real Mayans in the epic flick, which tells the story of the people who built a civilisation in Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras.
However, the movie also depicts Mayans as being extremely violent, prompting Cajas to term the bloodshed as being "historically inaccurate''.
