Defending Dreamgirls

Defending Dreamgirls

The studios behind the Oscar-nominated film did not react lightly to R&B star Smokey Robinson's recent comments that Jamie Foxx's portrayal of a manipulative, greedy girl-group manager in Dreamgirls was an "insulting" depiction of Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr.

"The creators of the Dreamgirls movie have blatantly indicated that they are depicting Berry Gordy and Diana Ross and the Supremes and Motown and they have done it with a lot of false information and negativity," Robinson told Access Hollywood earlier this month, adding that he felt the studios owed the legendary record producer a public apology.

"Berry Gordy created something with his dream that allowed a lot of other dreams to come true and he did it with integrity, he did it honestly," Robinson said, pointedly referring to the film's Curtis Taylor Jr. character's ties to organized crime.

It's about time there was a black musical. Fantastic movie and adaptation of the life of the Supremes and Diana Ross.

Actually the only comparison is that there was a girl group in the 1960's--and that is it if you've ever read Mary Wilson's book "Dream Girls My Life as a Supreme." By Wilson's 1980's book acount, if the movie OR the original broadway musical was an actual depiction, then the Beyonce character would be closer to Diana Ross' personality portrayed in the book and from other accounts as a real B****. SHe wouldn't have cared if Effie's song was stolen and Effie would have died in poverty as did Florence Ballard. It is an extremely loosely based musical. Let's not make it any more than that and a lot of fun to watch.

wow hey people...it's hollywood...if you didn't think they would take a story and twist it around to all lies and something to would make them money...you need to get a life...movies are not real...and even when based on real people or events...they are still not real...i don't think an apology is needed at all...they even changed the names so there is no actual ties to the real people...they covered their buts on this one...sorry Robinson...but you don't have a case
