March 14, 2007 -- Iran blasted Hollywood's latest blockbuster yesterday, saying it spreads lies about a 2,500-year-old battle in order to launch a cultural war against Iranians.

The movie "300," which earned a huge $70 million in its opening U.S. weekend, is "cultural and psychological warfare," the Tehran government declared.

Iranians, including thousands who signed an online petition denouncing the film, say it portrays their ancient forbears as crazed monsters led by an effeminate emperor, Xerxes, who is outfought by heroic Greeks in the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C.

"Hollywood declares war on Iranians," read a headline in the moderate newspaper Ayandeh-No.

A front-page article charged that the film spreads the lie that Iran "has long been the source of evil, and modern Iran's ancestors are the ugly murderous savages you see in '300.' "

    This is just a movie after all... But while I can certainly understand that Iranians [in general] might not be impressed by this, they *are* aware that

    the movie

    is based

    on a comic book?

    This movie isnt based on real events. Yes there are obvious similarities, but the movie is based on a graphic novel. Frank Miller's 300 isnt even a real depiction of the events. Factually, "they" arent even sure whether the number was one million or one hundred thousand, but for the sake of a fictitious story, damn, one million works beautifully.

    And seriously, compare the two groups. One group is just an army being led by a leader to conquer the world. How many times has that happened? Any country with a sizable army has "expanded" its borders at any real posibility prior to real international laws being set, but, as was mentioned previous to this post, the Spartans, killing babies for being too small? ...for being deformed? The *greeks* ought to be the ones throwing a fit here...

    Its not like the Spartans where all good either though, I mean Genetic Cleansing ? Killing Babies because they were too small or weak or deformed/defects. This is a classic war story. There is no pure good or pure evil, Merely, more the lesser evil conquers the more evil. Its just a war over land and people and money and power. The Ancient Greeks are just as guilty as the Persians.

    That being said the movie is a bit one sided... I mean those Persian concubines/whores really could have looked a lot better. Keeping in mind that it wasn't just the persian armies that were fighting Sparta but all of Asia as well, we dont see Japan or China or more relivantly "KOREA" kicking up a massive fit do we ?(correct me if im wrong tho tehe)

    Another thing is that America and Greece are completely unrelated... The Iranians can try spin it to a West vs East thing but I mean ffs its based on one of Frank Miller's Graphic Novels Isnt it ? It has F*** all to do with Politics !

    what the hell is wrong with people? its a movie for christ sake! like some people have already said, a lot of people probably wudnt even know that Iran used to be Persia. I'm getting sick of all these countries and religions saying that everyone is against them, or everyone wants to start a war with them etc. why cant people get a life and just enjoy a film as entertainement. Hell I've seen loads of films where the english are portrayed as the bad guys, even in america a lot of the bad guys in the tv programs turn out to be english, but that doesnt make me think everyone is trying to spread hate about england.

    GET A LIFE IRAN! there are far more important things in life than complaining about a movie that might make you look bad! besides its not like this movie is gonna make you look any worse

    well i should say that this is not a true story because this story was written by greeks such as herodot who were enemies with iran!also lets look at the facts 300 against 1000000?!!but i think its just a movie and doesnt bother us.

    Well lets look at the facts for a minute: This is based on a true story where aprox. 1 million troops were amassed by the persians to cut down an army of about 300. I'm sorry but that just sounds BLOOD THIRSTY SAVAGE TO ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If the fucking shoe fits... WEAR IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • that was the connection i automatically made... that a comic version of an ancient war was produced with the intent of reinforcing negative middle eastern stereotypes.

    they over estimate bright the average American is most of which i'm sure has no clue what or where Persia was let alone come to the conclusion that it demonizes modern middle eastern ancestry.

    i think america should move their butt off middle-east.. and they should also stop minding south americans business.. it seems like they want to take over the world..

    although 300 is just a movie and iranis should play cool with it..
