In Greek mythology, Uranus & Gaea were man and wife who gave birth to children who were ferocious beings of tremendous size. They were called Gigantes or "Giants". Among the childrenwas a group called Titans & Titanesses. Hence, gigantic and titanic have become synonymous & both are used to describe something that is terribly huge.
In 1911, the ship Titanic was launched amidst much fanfare. Many thought the name was aptly chosen because of the sheersize of the ship. In fact, the ship's buliders felt it was so huge that it was unsinkable. Consequently, they didn't give much consideration to emergency requirements such as lifeboats and life preservers. On its maiden voyage across the Atlantic Ocean, the Titanic struck an iceberg. It took merely three hours for the ship to be competely submerged. More than 1500 passengers perished.
There's a type of dinosaur known as 'Titanosaurus'or "Titanic Lizard".
In 1791, an English man called William Gregor discovered a new metal known Titanium.
