First James Bond Dies at 89

First James Bond Dies at 89

Barry Nelson, an MGM contract player during the 1940s who later had a prolific theater career and was the first actor to play James Bond on screen, has died. He was 89. Nelson died on April 7 while traveling in Bucks County, Pa., his wife, Nansi Nelson, said Friday. The cause of death was not immediately known, she said.

He is the answer to the trivia question: Who was the first actor to play James Bond? Before Sean Connery was tapped to play the British agent on the big screen in 1962's "Dr. No," Nelson played Bond in a one-hour TV adaptation of "Casino Royale" in 1954.

Among his other film credits were "Airport" and "The Shining," and he also appeared on such TV shows as "Murder, She Wrote," "Dallas" and "Magnum P.I."

No one could ever play "Bond" the way Sean Connery played "Bond". Still my condolences to the family, friends and fans of Barry Nelson.

I remember Casino Royale from my war years. David Niven played James Bond. But I seem to recall that even Woody Allen played the part. I believe there were a couple more. I mostly remember the music. I think played by Tijuana Brass or I might be mistaken. It was in his style anyway.

Have Barry in the DVD of "The Shinning".His performance is shadowed by Jack Nicholson's performance.Saddened to hear Barry has gone.Wasn't he in TV series "Peyton Place" &/or "Falcon Crest".Can't remember, but I do remember David Nivan's performance as Bond. But everyone would agree Sean Connery made James Bond his own by breathing life into the screen character. Connery's Accamey Award was well deserved for his character created for the film & didn't exist in the real life of Elliot Ness. "TheMusicMan"

I hate to split hairs and correct everyone, but UNOFFICIALLY there were 3 James Bond actors before Sean Connery.

First was Barry Nelson, which the article got right.

Second, although denied and "disavowed" by the Flemming estate, David Niven played him in a Bond spoof also called "Casino Royale". (His name really was James Bond, but there were several "impostors" in the film also using the same name)

And third, and quite possibly the weirdest occurance, is that in "Dr. No", the Bond in the famous gun-barrel sequence is not Sean Connery, but an uncredited actor. That sequence was filmed before Connery was ever hired.

Nelson only appeared in a tv adaptation, so technically Connery was the first to appear in a bond 'film'

Ok, good. I'm not the only one that noticed they have pic of the wrong Bond. But did this scare the mess out of any one else that didn't know Sean Connery wasn't actually the first only the first for the movie franchise?!
