David Goyer will direct "Magneto," the "X-Men" spinoff in development from 20th Century Fox and Marvel Studios that centers on the villain played in the original trilogy by Ian McKellen.

After the first three "X-Men" films grossed more than $1 billion worldwide, Fox and Marvel hatched the spinoff program. "Magneto" will be the second such movie to go into production. First up is "Wolverine," a David Benioff-scripted film that will star Hugh Jackman as the steel-clawed mutant; Fox and Marvel will set a director shortly on that pic.

Goyer will develop a "Magneto" script that was written by Sheldon Turner.

McKellen's participation in "Magneto" will likely be limited since the film is an origin story. In a storyline hinted at by the original "X-Men" films, Magneto comes to grips with his mutant ability to manipulate metal objects as he and his parents try to survive in Auschwitz. Magneto meets Professor Xavier (played as the wheelchair-bound mutant leader by Patrick Stewart) when the latter is a soldier liberating the concentration camp.

Magneto hones his powers by hunting down and killing Nazi war criminals who tortured him, and his lust for vengeance turns Xavier and Magneto into enemies. Both characters will be played by actors in their 20s.

    I cannot wait 4 magneto and wolverine's movies i love x-men, an also u can't expect them 2 do it exavtly like the comic, theres plenty of book to film movies that are nothing at all like it, an if v probs are jus eye colour an names...dont think thats much of a prob. the movies are gud thats all that matters ;p

    There were MANY holes in the "X-Men" movies that weren't true to the comics. The five original X-Men were Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Angel, Iceman and Beast - The Phoenix was a cosmic entity that took Jean's likeness, not a psychological meltdown - Rogue never had a "real name" - The boy she put into a coma was named "Cody" and it happened on the banks of a river - Storm was from Africa, not the US, and she had BLUE eyes - Wolvie is Canandian - Peter (Colossus) is Russion - Magneto had 2 children, Quicksilver/Scarlet Witch - The Beast's mutation was being super-agile, the blue fur was the result of a serum he made - Magneto had nothing to do with creating Cerebro - Jean was the second-highest level telepath in the world - JUST to name a FEW of the things wrong in the "X-Men" movie...This "Magneto" movie will SUCK!!!

    I agree, this is bullshit! The half ass attempt to make a movie eliminating some original X_men characters (Havok, Gambit, Psykelocke, the blob)and inserting members originally from X factor (Iceman, Beast, Archangel)was an insult to true fans! As well as the sad lack of development of characters such as nightcrawler, Rogue, Colossus, Sabretooth, Cyclops, The Phoenix. I mean, these are all main characters and deserve just as much screen time and character depth as wolverine and magneto. If you're gonna do a movie based on a comic series, stay true to that comic. And how the hell are they gonna get some skinny ass kid to play colossus? What were they thinkin.....oh yeah, sell your soul for a buck. Typical.

    i hope these aren't the only movies they do.... would like some development of rogue, storm.... plus it completely depends on casting. if they get some losers who can't act to play them, i will be in a rage. last stand was disappointing enough!

    I would also like an individual movie on the other characters, including Gambit, Psylocke, and well...just some of the more favored ones from the original series that weren't featured accurately in the movies or featured at all.

    You didnt get it did you?? The original actor CANT play Magneto cause this is a story set in his youth .. McKellen cant play a 20 something guy.

  • I have to agree with ramesworld on this one, Wolverine has went solo in comics already so it'll probably be the only one made. I'd be interested in seeing this movie, but it just wouldn't bring in the bank for the movie studio that the X-Men movies do. They should just stick to those and bring out more characters that fans love.

  • It sounds interesting, but the wolverine project will probably be the only one to get made since the character has already appeared in comicbooks solo.
