According to ShockTillYouDrop, MGM and producer Frank Mancuso Jr are currently developing the sequel to the 1999 "Stigmata." Mancuso (producer of the original) and company are currently going out to writers for ideas on the direction of the sequel.

The original film was about a hairdresser Frankie Page (Patricia Arquette), who exhibits signs of Stigmata, the physical wounds Christ received from his crucifixion. Father Andrew Kiernan (Gabriel Byrne), a researcher of miracles on behalf of the Vatican, is sent to investigate. Kiernan ends up being torn between helping Frankie and revealing the discovery of a long-lost Gospel that would spell disaster for the future of the Catholic Church.

The film was directed by Rupert Wainwright (The Fog) and earned $89.5 million worldwide on a $29 million budget.

At this point, it is unknown if MGM will release the "Stigmata 2" straight to DVD.
