AFI or The American Film Institute Rethinks The Top 100 Movies of All Time

AFI has just redone their 100 Best American movies of all time list, moving some things from the old list around, and adding some new ones. This is the first time they've done this ever... or since they made the list for the first time in 1997. A few new movies where considered and you can see that there are a few modern additions to the list such as...

Saving Private Ryan

The Lord Of The Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring

The Sixth Sense

Other than that most of the movies are older, as you can imagine. The Institute tends to go for older movies, but some newer movies such as "The Matrix", "Gangs Of New York", "Children of Men", "The Aviator", and probably "The Departed" deserve to make the list, but they aren't on there because there's such a bias towards old movies... AFI needs to modernize and do it fast or people will stop caring what they have to say. I'm a little fed up, because while those three new movies are great films, thats all that they added post 97. Not cool.

how the hell could any of those three, totally crappy, movies get on this list? I'm sorry, but I think they have lost all integrity with these new picks.

Saving Private Ryan was interesting in terms of how real Steven made the action scenes, but the whole film is such a Hollywood Cliché.

Sixth sense? A ghost movie, that basically ripped off Jacob's latter? The opening dialog of this film is so terrible, it's just so weak, staged and obvious!

And Lord of the Rings? Oh my God! That is so retarded I don't even know where to begin! Truly, I was so bored watching that film I almost fell asleep. How can this film be considered as a top one hundred films of all time? It's the most basic script type, no substance and all glitter. There are so many films like this that I find it hard to believe they would even consider this.

Man, Woody was right, when he said they've been systematical reducing out tastes for so long now that we can't even see what's of value anymore. Too sad.

I believe that there are surely some more newer movies that need to be added to that list. The Aviator being one. Also In Love And War, We Were Soldiers, and several others......movie makers are finally trying to show the rest of the world some of the inside things that military families go through, although , it only skims the surface of the fears and the pains that we suffer through proudly....

Haha, I can only hope... Personally I'd put movies as recent as "Zodiac" on there. However the older movies are definetely the most original, its just that the modern good movies (not the hollywood crap like ghostrider) tend to be better than older movies because they are building on ideas that have worked in the past. When you build on something, you generally just add cool stuff to an already cool idea. Generally... not always. So some new movies are really really good, but just not all that original...

Well, considering how many movies that Hollywood remakes, it doesn't surprise me.

Generally the older movies are better...Saving Private Ryan is good and should probably be on the list. But, I think that Return of the King was a better flick than Fellowship. Sixth Sense, sure, I'll go for that, but I thought Unbreakable was better.

How about Good Night, and Good Luck?

AFI is probably filled with oldsters and really, movie making is still a young babe in terms of storytelling.

Hang tight. Someday, guys like you will be running the show, and then the list will have to grow to subcategories instead of just the top 100.

The more people that exist in this country, the more things will change. After all, the current populace loves the Patriot Act. Me, I think that it's the real terrorist (Patriot Act).
