The Hobbit (2009) The Hobbit is a prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy and is directed by spider-man director Sam Raimi.

Local Shire Hobbit Bilbo Baggins, relative of Frodo Baggins, is living a quiet, peaceful life until Gandalf the Grey walks into his home with a band of wandering dwarfs and drags poor Bilbo into a quest that entails defeating a dragon, a three way battle of men, dwarfs and monsters and, most importantly of all, lead Bilbo into contact with a peculiar ring that has had and will have a great impact on the future of their world.

I do think it's a shame Peter Jackson did not get to direct this, but he's made his millions. Sam Raimi has made some wonderful movies.
Maybe, if the Hobbit is a success, the powers that be will turn to The Simillarion. Or maybe The Dragonriders of Pern (now I'm really dreaming!)

I'm in love with the book, and I think that even though they should have done this movie first...it's still going to be a wonderful movie.

I was upset at some of the changes too folks, but be realistic. JRR Tolkein would not let any of his books come to the screen when he was alive for a reason. It is not possible to do it by the book excatly, each book of LOTR would have to have been 5 or 6 hours each and no one is going to sit through that except us hard core fans. He refused the Beatles when they wanted to do it in 1967, so they did magical mystery tour instead (plan B). The Hobbit will be easier to bring to the screen and keep a lot of the story intact, but it still won't be easy. Next to the Bible they are the greatest books ever writen bar none.

I have a secret love for this book. In a world ful of greed and war it's the perfect time for it. No other movie will stand in it's way. A movie about more dwarfs is great.

It is in no way a spin-off. J.R.R Tolkien wrote this book before he got into the lord of the ring's trilogy, therefore making it THE Lord Of The Rings prequel!

I think they should've made The Hobbit first, before the triology. (Considering it introduces the story of the trilogy)... So my applauds to Sam Raimi! (Just hope he doesn't ruin it).

Well fact about Same Raimi going into the directors chair could be true partially means that the film possibly would not take home any Academy Awards. Reason no Peter Jackson is because he took new line to court and sued them for alot of cash. He won and in the end was banned from new line cinema.

So fae no writer is attached to the Hobbit's screenplay but production doesn't start til possibly the end of next year. All I do hope it Weta comes in and does the visual effects and props.Even though Peter cannot be involved I am hoping the film is still good
