IGN has been informed by a reliable source that Sony Pictures is developing a remake of "The Karate Kid" that will be produced by Will Smith's Overbook Entertainment and Jerry Weintraub. Weintraub also produced the 1984 film, starring Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita, and its three sequels.
The site adds that Smith's 9 year old son is attached to star in the remake. Jaden Smith starred opposite his dad in last year's "The Pursuit of Happyness," which was also released by Sony.
The original film revolved around a handyman/martial arts master, who agrees to teach a bullied boy karate and shows him that there is more to the martial art than fighting.
At this point, the new "Karate Kid" is out to writers, so there is no news on where the story will go.
