Studio bosses balked at proposals for Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd movie, because they feared a musical/horror film with no "pop songs" would bomb at the box office, according to the director himself. The maverick filmmaker struggled to win over movie bigwigs, not least when he opted to cast Johnny Depp - who has no previous singing experience - in the lead role. But Burton has praised Hollywood for greenlighting such a risky project. He tells British film magazine Empire, "What's weird is that they (the studios) are afraid of musicals anyway, but an R-rated musical with blood that's not based on pop songs, it's like, 'F**k!' "Then it was like, 'Um, can he (Depp) sing?' Nobody knew. I didn't know. So that's the joke of the whole thing. In a way, that's the surreal nature of Hollywood, so you have to love it for that because on paper, it's like the worst idea of all time!"

    thank god they still made the movie, coz it turned out amazing (and now we DO know if johnny can sing)!! but in hollywood, you have to take risks - things do not always turn at as people may think!!

    Hey Tim! Not only do you have a fan of your work out here (minus "Beetlejuice"...sorry), he's also a fan of the original Sondheim stage play, and has been waiting for a pretty freakin' long time to see your take on it. Unfortunately, he lives in redneck country, and has to wait for Oscar buzz before he gets to see it. Apparently, Carmike theater management has the same opinions about musicals that studios do. AAAAARGH!!!!!!

    I saw the movie and fought to stay awake in the first 40 minutes. The movie reminded me of almost every Tim Burton rolled into one. The deaths were just so silly and corny comical the movie lost any feel. 2 and half stars out of five at best.

    Well, I live in Maine, and they aren't showing it in any theater's close to mine...which sucks! I am waiting for it to get to my hometown, which could be forever...

    I absolutely loved this movie. it had blood and music what else could you ask for. surprisingly Depp was a good singer and was unsurprisingly perfect for the role of sweeny todd. Because of the throat slitting i wouldn't recomend this movie to young children but anyone who enjoys a good musical killing go at it.

  • I thought it was a great idea, because i appreciate musicals. Life is about taking risks and that is exactly what Tim Burton did. You have to respect him for that!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I actually (gulp) just watched Cry Baby for the very first time last night,More about that on my page,Anyways I really don't think that ANY of those actors/actresses in that movie were actually doing the singing.But in the Sweeney Todd interviews Johnny was talking about how Tim Burton asked him if he could sing and Johnny said,"Well I can try."

  • Sweeney Todd was AWSOME!!! Johnny Depp sings so Awsome, and beautiful in it...he looks pretty hot when he is all dark looking...lol.
