According to ProductionWeekly [via B-D], Martin Barnewitz has been attached to direct "The Messengers 2," which begins shooting this April in Bulgaria. Barnewitz comes to us from Denmark, having only directed a few shorts and several feature films that were only released in his country.
The new movie is a prequel and goes back to the farm from the first film to finally learn the story of John Rollins – the simple North Dakota farmer, struggling to save his farm and hold his family together. When he places a mysterious scarecrow in his field, his luck changes for the better... but it may be at the cost of his sanity.
"The Messengers" was released in February of last year and went on to earn $55 million in worldwide ticket sales, on a $16 million budget. Its prequel will end up skipping the theaters and go straight to DVD.
