The mutual admiration was overflowing as the Rolling Stones and Martin Scorsese met with a horde of international press to talk up their docu, “Shine a Light.”
The Berlinale’s opening night film captures the Stones exclusive performance at New York’s Beacon Theater in 2006 to celebrate Bill Clinton’s 60th birthday.
Through Scorsese has used the Stones music in many of his films - as recent as “The Departed” - this is the first time the director has worked one-on-one with the band. “We kind of made a bond even before we met,” said Keith Richards.
Mick Jagger quipped that, “this is the only Scorsese movie that doesn’t use Gimme Shelter.”
“I actually didn’t see the Stones play until the ‘70s, but I would watch them in my head as I listened to their music,” said Scorsese. “It’s timeless. It rejuvenates me.”
The planning of the shoot provides some tension in the film. Scorsese admitted that he was initially concerned that “bringing in my machine might get in the way” of the concert.
